[linux-lvm] rh kernel patches

[Pierre Lamb]

Is there a correct way to patch RH kernels. I have
tried using the "final path" to update 2.4.7 rh kernel
but just get errors. Is there a work around for this
problem.

Red Hat uses Alan Cox kernel, i think you can not aply the patches from 
1.0.1rc1 and rc2 to -ac kernel
at least it didn't worked for me with 2.4.9-ac5  but i think you should 
be able to aply the lvm-1.0 release
it worked for me

You built the patch correctly using LVM/PATCHES/Makefile ?

I quess I don't understand the whole picture. From the
/PATCHES/readme file I was lead to believe all I need
to to id use the patch file labeled
"lvm-0.8final-2.4.0.patch" and apply it to the rh
kernel 2.4.7.  Am I mistaken???? PLease provide
guidance..

RedHat kernel? I didn't think there was such a thing. Especially not 2.4.7.
Read the README again and you'll see you must  run make to generate a kernel 
specific patch.

Which release of the tools are you looking at ?  1.0.1-rc2 I hope ?

Pierre,

I'd like to pass on some very useful advice I received from this list.

the LVM patches are made against Linus' kernel (which you can find at
kernel.org).  RedHat makes modifications to the kernel (to add device
drivers and god knows what else) and so the LVM patches may or may not work
against the RH-modified kernel, depending on whether RH modified some piece
that LVM patches.

The simplest thing to do is to just get the latest Linus kernel.  I
struggled with the RH 2.4.7 kernel until I decided it was not worth the time
and went and got the Linus kernel.  Make sure to get the LVM rc1 (at least)
since the 1.0 release had some problems with changes that Linus made.

I'm now happily running RH 7.0 with the 2.4.9 kernel.

with the patch command to the kernel, I gues I am
incorrect.

you alredy have lvm-0.9beta2 wich comes with kernel-2.4
you shouldn't downgrade to 0.8 try the LVM-1.0-release
untar it, run configure in the toplevel LVM directory , than go to 
PATCHES and do make
you should have lvm-1.0.patch for your kernel in the directory
and patch the kernel
cat linux-2.4.7rh-lvm-1.0.patch | patch -p1 -d /usr/src/linux
                 |                                                       
           |
     here is your kernel patch                           and that's the 
path to your kernel


rebuild the kernel and it should be allright
if duiring the rebuild you have some problems with building the lvm part 
of the kernel

run ones more configure , in PATCHES make ,
cat linux-2.4.7rh-lvm-1.0.patch | patch -p1 -d /usr/src/linux

and that's it
you shouldn't have more troubles

make the lvm library and binaries and install them

Hi,
I have patched RH 2.4.7 kernel successfully. I understand what you want
to do and must say that it's a *good* thing for 2 reasons:
- having ext3 in the kernel
- having quotas3 in the kernel

To do so, get the redhat sources. Put them in <srcdir> (Ex:
/tmp/linux-2.4.7-rh)
Get the LVM 1.0.1rc2 (not another release) and uncompress them (Ex:
/tmp/LVM/1.0.1rc2)
Then, go in .../LVM/1.0.1-rc2 and run ./configure
--with-kernel_dir=<srcdir>
Then make, make install the tools (Note that kernel is not touch at this
point). They yre mandatory to make your LVM system working.
Then go in <srcdir>, and patch your kernel with a patch made by
configure just for your kernel. It's in
.../LVM/1.0.1rc2/PATCHES/lvm_1.0.1rc2-2.4.7.<snip>.patch. It was created
by configure for the kernel you gave in <srcdir>
Then patch it with:
- cd <srcdir>
- patch -p1 < .../LVM/1.0.1rc2/PATCHES/lvm.<snip>.patch

And you are done. (quite...)
Then make bzImage will compile it, except for a little thing: min/max
functions. RH kernel is made from Alan Cox one. And Linus kernel changed
min/max functions. LVM uses Linus min/max functions while -ac (RedHat)
kernel uses old min/max functions.

During the compilation, you'll get errors with files in drivers/md/.
They are lvm.c, lvm-snap.c and perhaps a third I don't remember. To
correct those, just copy the 2 macros in each fault file:
#define min(a,b) (((a)<(b))?(a):(b))
#define max(a,b) (((a)>(b))?(a):(b))
At the beginning of the file (before anything else).

And compile with work.

But if you don't need ext3 nor quotas3, then go with a plain Linus
kernel (available at www.kernel.org), you'll have less problems... :-)
