OK, this is what I did:

1. reinstall the xbin tarball
2. run X as root
3. close X
4. login as user
5. run X

This is black magic, I know, and at this point I don't care to understand what
happened. I'm just glad my system is working again.

Why am I posting an answer to my own question, do you ask? Because it will
end up in archives and next time when I search for a solution to this problem
again I will find it :)
