Dear subscribers.
I'm planning to buy a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop with an ATI Radeon 9000
Mobility 64 MB as the chosen graphics accelerator. I would like to know
if there are drivers available for this card for Linux, preferably with
both 2D and OpenGL (3D) support. I'm running SuSE Linux 8.0
Professional.
Any comments on the suitability of this computer for running Linux are
also welcome.
Kind regards, Ola Theander

The best place IMHO to get an answer to your question is
http://google.com/linux
Place Dell Inspriron 8200 in the search engine and you will get a big suprise.
The experts dont seem to like it much tho, as a matter of fact they moaned at
Redhat a lot as well, good job redhat has problems on laptops.
I suggest you should read this one as well, it will be in the list you get
from google but i read this one.
http://www.astro.umd.edu/~teuben/linux/laptop/dell8200.html
Take a close look at the XF86Config-4 file, they use the nvidia driver if you
read on and digest you will see that the radeon is not fully supported "yet".

According to lspci I have:
ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M6 LY
Not the same, but no doubt simpilar. This one works great with 2D and
3D acceleration. The 3D acceleration only just got stable since I
installed kernel 2.4.19 and XFree 4.2.1 from (Debian/unstable). Quake
3 is quite playable (at 640x480 anyway).
Framebuffer works great at 1024x768 using the VESA framebuffer.

The only prolem I am having now is that mplayer won't play large movies
when I have the "dri" module loaded. Something to do with xvideo and
dri interfering I guess.
