help recover filesystem corrupted by failing ide controller

Wednesday evening, my computer started giving weird errors. ls in a busy 
directory showed lots of garbled filenames. Within an hour it was unbootable. 
I called a friend and we went and swapped drives around; the computer 
wouldn't recognize either drive, and he suspected a motherboard problem. 
Today I got a loaner and put the drives in it; it recognized them both and 
booted right up. reiserfsck -x, however, showed lots of crosslinked files and 
other errors I don't understand. Attempting to cat .procmailrc hung cat. So I 
ran reiserfsck --rebuild-tree, which has worked for me before, and it made 
the filesystem unbootable. -x claims that lots of bitmaps are wrong. I 
haven't yet gotten the latest reiserfsck. The one I have is 3.x.0i from 
Mandrake 8.0 or 8.1. The reiserfs version in the kernel is 3.6.25; the 
filesystem is 3.5.x. Can I use debugreiserfs -p to dump the tree and recreate 
the filesystem on another disk?

If you already did a --rebuild-tree with that _old_ (~2years!!!) 
reiserfsck I pray you have a backup somewhere.

Try the latest -pre-release

that is said to have some bug fixes against the latest reiserfsprogs 
release

If you have problems with internet downloads I can send the package by 
mail to you.

Try the prerelease reiserfsck /dev/disk/you/have and follow the 
instuctions. And, please, report back if errors remain.

If I couldn't cat a single file without the cat hanging, how could I make a 
backup?

I have 3.6.4 on this laptop. I can modify the spell and recast it. Is it OK to 
copy the binary to the other box (they're both AMD processors) and run it? 
(The laptop is running Source Mage, the box with the trashed filesystem is 
running Mandrake.)

Sorry, Pierre, you should have done it 1 min. before this happened, err, 
regularily. I feel with you.
Try upgrading the kernel when this is fixed and check your hardware is 
o.k., before.

Modify spell? Recast? Source Mage? Mmh.

You can try running the old binary. Depending on the corresponding libs 
it will work. If not - try a new thing.

And don't use it on the old system before you are sure to have the 
failures' reason: old old kernel, old old FS etc.

I refer to the following mail on this list I'll cite below mostly for 
the compiler-flag you'll need for a possibly needed independent binary

looks like progs were compiled with other libs. Could you rebuild progs 
where
you booted again or link them statically:
	make LDFLAGS='-static'
and try agan.

You could have made a copy of whole partition with dd.

We saw some reports about problems arising if glibc is notably different.
So you should either gave statically linked reiserfsck or run in on the system close
to one where reiserfsck was built.

I just compiled the prerelease and will try it first on /var, which is equally 
corrupted (the computer was getting a lot of mail and I use Maildir). The 
glibc versions differ, so I'd like to build it statically. How do I do this?

I wanted to have written this in my mails yesterday night.

You'll need to process

  make LDFLAGS='-static'

or have this LDFLAGS set somewhere in the Makefile what I can't tell 
anything more about. Maybe Oleg & Company can if that command doesn't work.

Did that and had to scp it because the programs were too big for a floppy. It 
said:

reiserfs_open_journal: journal parameters from super block does not match to 
journal parameters from journal.

As I can mount /var, what's wrong? Does reiserfsck 3.6 not work on a 3.5 
filesystem?

There is a new check for journal parameters were added which helps to recover
fs with relocated journal and in a few other cases. These parameters were not
stored correctly in old kernels before relocated journal appeared. This is 
nothing to worry about, and you can fix with fsck --rebuild-sb help - say 
there to fix parameters in the jouranl by ones from the super block.

Thanks. I successfully refscked /var and /home and the computer is up and 
running.
