Hi,

I've read the FAQ and searched trough the www (google) but couldnt find
the answer of my problem.

sensors reports null values. see attached files for details.

Contact me if you need further details.

Thank you

OK, I took a look at your files. Your I2C bus has gone mad for some
reason. The sensors-detect script finds way too many sensors, you can't
possibly have them all.

The problem you encountered may be related to another issue I'm
currently working on. I need the answer to the following questions:

1* Which version of Perl is your system running. I guess 5.8.0. The
exact package version would be appreciated (so that I can check if
Mandrake added some patches).

2* Is your Mandrake system UTF8-aware?

3* If the answer to question #2 is yes, are you using an UTF8 locale?
Check with "locale" (send me the command output in any case).

With these answers, I may have some ideas to investigate one step
further.

One more question: did you install i2c and lm_sensors with Mandrake
packages or from the sources?

Can you give me the packages versions? Maybe Mandrake added some patches
of their own, and I'd better know before I go digging.

lm_sensors 2.7.0-2mdk

i2c : can't find this packetage ?? (tried rpm -q i2c)
shouldnt it be a dependecy of lm_sensors ??

no answer for i2c

For sensors :
ksensors-0.7.2-4mdk
liblm_sensors1-2.7.0-2mdk
lm_sensors-2.7.0-2mdk

I do have i2cdump, i2cdetect, and i2cset.
package , they all come form lm_sensors

So we can assume Mandrake's kernel is i2c-patched. This will make our
job a bit harder, since you won't be able to upgrade i2c and lm_sensors
to CVS (and lm_sensors CVS won't work with i2c 2.7.0).

Good news. At least we have some tools to work with.

The first thing I'd like you to try is an updated version of
sensors-detect. You can grab it from there:
http://www2.lm-sensors.nu/~lm78/cvs/lm_sensors2/prog/detect/sensors-detect

If possible, i'd be better if you could perform a cold reboot prior to
running the script. I'd like to make sure your hardware (I2C bus for
that matter) is peaceful and no nasty module is lurking.

lauched after a reboot, see sensors-detect2.txt file
reboot again
lauched sensors, see sensors2.txt file. (still not working)

[root@athlon sensors]# ./sensors-detect
This program will help you to determine which I2C/SMBus modules you need to
load to use lm_sensors most effectively.
You need to have done a `make install', issued a `depmod -a' and made sure
`/etc/conf.modules' (or `/etc/modules.conf') contains the appropriate
module path before you can use some functions of this utility. Read
 doc/modules for more information.
Also, you need to be `root', or at least have access to the /dev/i2c[-/]* files
for some things. You can use prog/mkdev/mkdev.sh to create these /dev files
if you do not have them already.
If you have patched your kernel and have some drivers built-in you can
safely answer NO if asked to load some modules. In this case, things may
seem a bit confusing, but they will still work.

 BIOS vendor (ACPI): Nvidia
 System vendor (DMI): NVIDIA Corporation.
 BIOS version (DMI): 6.00 PG
We can start with probing for (PCI) I2C or SMBus adapters.
You do not need any special privileges for this.
Do you want to probe now? (YES/no): y
Probing for PCI bus adapters...
Use driver `i2c-amd756' for device 00:01.1: nVidia nForce SMBus
Probe succesfully concluded.

We will now try to load each adapter module in turn.
Module `i2c-amd756' already loaded.
Do you now want to be prompted for non-detectable adapters? (yes/NO): no
To continue, we need module `i2c-dev' to be loaded.
If it is built-in into your kernel, you can safely skip this.
i2c-dev is not loaded. Do you want to load it now? (YES/no): yes
 Module loaded succesfully.

We are now going to do the adapter probings. Some adapters may hang halfway
 through; we can't really help that. Also, some chips will be double detected;
we choose the one with the highest confidence value in that case.
If you found that the adapter hung after probing a certain address, you can
specify that address to remain unprobed. That often
 includes address 0x69 (clock chip).

Next adapter: bt848 #0 (Bit-shift algorithm)
Do you want to scan it? (YES/no/selectively): no

Next adapter: SMBus nVidia nForce adapter at 5020 (Non-I2C SMBus adapter)
Do you want to scan it? (YES/no/selectively): yes

Some chips are also accessible through the ISA bus. ISA probes are
typically a bit more dangerous, as we have to write to I/O ports to do
this. Do you want to scan the ISA bus? (YES/no): yes

I will now generate the commands needed to load the I2C modules.
Sometimes, a chip is available both through the ISA bus and an I2C bus.
ISA bus access is faster, but you need to load an additional driver module
for it. If you have the choice, do you want to use the ISA bus or the
 I2C/SMBus (ISA/smbus)? isa

WARNING! If you have some things built into your kernel, the
below list will contain too many modules. Skip the appropriate ones!
To load everything that is needed, add this to some /etc/rc* file:

#----cut here----
# I2C adapter drivers
# modprobe unknown adapter bt848 #0 using Bit-shift algorithm
modprobe i2c-amd756
modprobe i2c-isa
# I2C chip drivers
modprobe lm80
modprobe eeprom
modprobe ltc1710
modprobe smbus-arp
modprobe w83781d
# Next 2 lines are optional
sleep 3
/usr/local/bin/sensors -s
#----cut here----

To make the sensors modules behave correctly, add these lines to either
/etc/modules.conf or /etc/conf.modules:

#----cut here----
# I2C module options
alias char-major-89 i2c-dev
#----cut here----

Do you want to generate /etc/sysconfig/lm_sensors? (YES/no): yes
Copy prog/init/lm_sensors.init to /etc/rc.d/init.d/lm_sensors
for initialization at boot time.

The good point is that the Perl warnings have gone.

The bad point is that it now reminds me of another user report we had
some weeks ago. He had an Abit NV7m (nForce chipset) motherboad. Do you
by any chance have the same (or similar) motherboard? (or at least
chipset)

yes :-(

my card is MSI K7N420 pro with nforce chipset.

http://archives.andrew.net.au/lm-sensors/msg02219.html

I guess you'll confirm it's exactly the same problem (and chipset).
Sadly, we couldn't solve the problem for that user... I hope that
someone else on the list will have more (or, at least, better) ideas
than I had back then.
