Summary: enabling DMA on the Serverworks OSB4: IDE timeouts, a bus reset
and a DMA disabled harddisk
This morning I upgraded from 2.4.20 to 2.4.21, because I needed some extra
options and someone told me the "OSB4 in impossible state"-problem when
running a CD-ROM in DMA should be fixed. After booting, the disk runs completely in PIO mode, slow as hell. With
2.4.20 it was working without problems in UDMA33 mode. I use hdparm to
turn on DMA mode (hdparm -d1 /dev/hdb). Also trying MWDMA2 doesn't help:
still IDE reset.
Kernel version:
Linux version 2.4.21 (root@server) (gcc version 2.95.4 20011002 (Debian
prerelease)) #1 SMP Tue Jun 24 08:55:05 CEST 2003

For what it is worth, I have this on bkbits.net:
ServerWorks OSB4: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 79
    ServerWorks OSB4: chipset revision 0
ServerWorks OSB4: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later

and I ran 2.4.21 for a day or so before chickening out and downgrading to
2.4.20. I did not see any errors and I did run a full set of integrity
checks over all the data (BK checks, not an fsck, BK checks read and
checksum all the data).

I did get what looked like nasty corruption under 2.5.70.

Maxtor D540X 40GB (the model number should be in the logs I quoted)

It's slave to a TEAC IDE CD-ROM, which isn't used (I don't dare to put
in any CD there anymore ;))

The mainboard is an OEM Asus CUR-DLS, which came in a HP Netserver E800.
The IDE disk was bought a year or two ago with much datastorage for low
price in mind (yes, we make backups every night ;))
