I can't find an RPM for the 1.0.8 version... surely someone's out there on
RH??

I've been trying to make one with the spec file for 1.0.3 (which comes
included in Shriek) but am not having much success...

for one thing, I'm building as a regular user (non-root) and the Makefile
that gets generated uses C<install -o $USER -g $GROUP ...> which, of course
fails when it tries to chown.

I see in configure.in a couple of lines like:

dnl -- setup the ownership of the files
AC_ARG_WITH(user,
[ --with-user=USER Set the owner of installed files ],
  [ OWNER="$withval" ],
  [ OWNER="root" ])

but removing them still generates -u for install... I've also tried
C<./configure --without-user> but no dice.

how do I fix this?

uhm,
afaik redhat's lvm 1.0.3 was modified by sct (toghether with the kernel
part) to change pvmove behaviour, so if you are staying with rh's kernel
i'd leave that package alone

you can, but i don't know if it would be better to keep kernel and
userspace more or less in sync.
for your core problem. try running vgscan with -d option and see where
it fails.

More of: "if you want to stick with RedHat's kernel, don't change the lvm tools".

I just compile my own kernel and upgrade the lvm-tools at the same time.
I do it more for XFS support than updated LVM, but it's a nice side
benefit. :)

BTW: If anyone wants an RPM for the tools, take a look at
http://www.kluge.net/ftp/pub/felicity/SRPMS/

I did up 1.0.8 last night while upgrading the kernel. :)
