Hi,
this is my setup:
- server HP Proliant DL740 with Red Hat AS 3 (kernel 2.4.21-9ELsmp) with all
updates installed
- two Host Bus Adapter FC2214 with qla2x00 driver from HP (v.6.06.50)
- a SAN with an HP EVA3000 disk-array
- LVM

Does LVM support extending LUN size?
I extended size of an existing LUN from my disk-array manager but vgdisplay
shows me always the original size (with no free physical extents). No change
if I reboot, I need to destroy and re-create volume group.

Have I some other chance?

Thanks
Domenico Viggiani

Hello,

No chance, the size is fixed and written to the LUN by issuing the
pvcreate command.

Best regards

LVM1 does not support extending lun size.

did you partition the lun or are you using a whole device?
in the former case you can add a second partition, in the latter your
only chance is to reduce the lun again and assign the space as a new
lun, iirc you should be able to allocate more than one lun from the same disk group. i
am not that sure about reducing.
Watch out for the maximum number of sd devices in the kernel which is probably limited to
40 (CONFIG_SD_EXTRA_DEVS)

Hi Luca,

thank you for your clarification.

Sorry for obvious question: does LVM2 support extending LUN size? What is
the current status of LVM2?

Bye

Domenico

there was a plan for a pvresize command for lvm2 but it is not ready
yet, it should be possible to extend a pv by doing a vgcfgbackup,
editing the ascii backup file and doing a vgcfgrestore, search for a
mail from heinz in the archives explaining this.

lvm2 is working fine, provided you use a very recent 2.6 kernel or the
udm patchset, the mirror target used by pvmove is not yet finished iirc.
unfortunately lvm2 is not supported by RHAS 3.0
