Is it possible for a user to do this via email commands? I'd rather not
have to manually manage the lists manually.

We've prepared the infrastructure for this, so it'll be available as a
patch shortly after the digest patch, which we'll have ready (thanks to
Morten!) later this evening.
Both of them will be part of mlmmj-1.1 as well.

With current CVS it's possible to do this:
echo | mail listname+subscribe-nomail@domail.tld
and then one's subscribed to the list, but not getting any mail.
