I've registered Hollis Blanchard as a member of GRUB so that he can
commit his patches himself. Hollis, feel free to apply your patches
when approved.

I would be interested in developing a low level driver for my sound card,
which is not yet supported by ALSA. I have 21 years programming experience
with various operating systems and languages. I have never written a Linux
or Unix program. My C is a little rusty too. I've never done any audio or
driver programming, though I'm a musician and have experience of various
audio applications as a user. I'm willing to learn. I do have several
years experience programming for PCs (under the other operating system) and
I have done a great deal of "systems programming" type of development. So,
as of now, I don't see why I should not be able to learn to do well at
developing an ALSA sound card driver.
Is it reasonable for me to volunteer to develop a driver? Or would you
advise me develop my Linux programming skills in another way first? If you
would encourage me to develop a driver, then I could do with a few pointers
to get me started, please. I had a quick look at the two Developer
Documentation howtos on the ALSA web site, but did not spot anything in them
specific to drivers.
My sound card is a LynxONE, made by Lynx Studio Technology
http://www.lynxstudio.com/. There is an OSS driver for it, but it is not
free, and anyway I could not get it to work under SuSE Linux 8.0.
