Knoppix and Soundmodem

Folks,

I just got the Knoppix 3.8 CD and I think it is a good idea but...when I try 
to configure Soundmodem, it seems that there is no way to write the config 
to /etc/ax25.  This is true for many apps like F6FBB and HFTerm.

Is anyone aware of a method (other than installing the whole thing to hard 
drive) to write these configs, I presume something like a symlink to a DOS 
partition (I don't imagine it possible with NTFS).

Otherwise I would say the whole point of "Linux without installing Linux" is 
lost.  BTW I am a Linux newbie...so be gentle.  :-)

To those who may care,

It was a dumb mistake, I found that as root (duh), you can write to 
/etc/ax25 (I guess it is ramdisk)...cool!  So it is possible to configure 
apps like F6FBB and Soundmodem from the CD Knoppix.

If I try to use the persistent Knoppix image though, I get a segmentation 
fault on boot.

Beta or Alpha (or in between), Knoppix seems to be an OK way to get more 
people involved.

Rose module and kernel 2.6.11

Hi,

I have noticed something strange with rose module and 2.6 kernel (at 
least 2.6.10 and 2.6.11).

When loading rose module, it loads now automatically ax25 module. Good.

But, it also creates 9 interfaces from rose0 to rose9 with hardware 
address 0000000 as seen with IP address or ifconfig.

Is this what rose module should do actually ?
With previous versions, loading rose module did not create any rose 
interface. They were created by the application such as ROSE/FPAC.

Modprobe certainly got that right in 2.4 also.

It's crufty, yes.  No idea why the code was written the way it is but on
startup the code will generate 10 ROSE interfaces just in case.  However
the kernel does no "ifconfig roseX up", so ifconfig shouldn't display
them without the -a option.  If that happens to you then then I guess one
of your distribution's configuration mechanisms is playing a little
crazy.  You can easily see that in /proc/net/dev - any ROSE system will
have 10 rose%d devices in there.

Hi Dave, I know this is kind of late, but I am trying to play email 
catch-up...

Did you ever get any input on this?
I am interested in getting a live Linux Amateur radio CD that will actually 
work, but so far have had poor results with the "DX-linux" (I think its 
actually call TLF-Linux) for doing AX25 stuff and would like to somehow come 
up with a CD that I could save my configs to a thumb drive and then I could 
just sit down in front of whatever pc I needed to and get going with my 
familiar proggies and do ARES stuff with little headaches...
I couldn't even get DX-Linux to boot for me (well it finally did after a 
couple hours, lol) and finally gave up on it...

So what if anything did you come up with?

Hey Douglas and the gang;

Um, google up "Harv's Hamsack Hack". It has the 'save settings to usb
stuff' you are asking for. Harv's documentation is fairly decent too. Plus
if you bug him a bit, he should be able to tell you what he does to make
these.

Oh yeah; it is "tracked" at the linux ham radio software site in au-land.

Hi,

I don't have any experience with using AX25 with Linux, but I
discovered a KNOPPIX distro at http://hamshack-hack.sourceforge.net/
that has a lot of ham and digital communications "stuff" in it.

I can't endorse it other than to say it does boot and seems to work.
