Hey thank you all for your replies!
My mistake, Pochini! I saw "Discontinued" in the notes field in ALSA
soundcard matrix and thus concluded you were not supporting them anymore!
:D
Anyways, I already have kernel version 2.6.12.3. So I dont have a clue if
im missing something somehow, since im just a newbie linux user. If you
think of something obvious i might be missing please let me know!
Again, thank you all for your support and patience. :)

Oh almost forgot! None of firmware files in my /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware/ea
directory is zero sized.

I may be completely off track here but...
I was caught out recently because FC4 for example expects firmware in a
different directory than /usr/lib/hotplug (from memory /lib/firmware ?)
take a look at /etc/hotplug/firmware.agent, and see which path it is using to
look for the firmware

Aaaaaalright! I got it finally working!! Thank you!!
I have some problems now that I think are beyond the scope of this
thread... Well, in fact all of it was out of the scope because it wasnt a
bug at all!
I can make SDL based apps work fine, and gnome events, but only
separately. I need to disable gnome sound server in order to make sdl apps
work, and vice versa, so i was wondering if there is a work around for
this to use both things at a time.
My Layla24 is finally sounding! yay!! :D

I can only hope that distros will ship with working hotplug scripts :)
With DSL apps you have to set an env variable, eg.:
export AUDIODEV=plughw:0,0,2
and they must be compiled with ALSA support. You can use the monitor mixer
on windos too, but echomixer has a much simpler interface. The moving
VU-meters is the background noise of the analog input channels. Did you
try aplay ? Did you remember to set the volume :) ?

Ok, I installed the echomixer, btw I must say its far much better than the
one for win, since you can redirect any i/os as you please with the amount
of dB you desire :))) I've read about that before... i think the mixing is
done in the card itself. Thats great.
The leftmost 8 signals in the VU meter are trembling, with their peaks
around -96dB, but i still cant make any audio program sound.
Alsaconf still doesnt recognise it.
Willing to hear from you, thanks.

try aplay ? Did you remember to set the volume :) ?

Ok I dont have a clue what ive just done but i made hotplug load the
firmware!!!
After downloading the hotplug scripts from sourceforge and trying all the
things listed above, i rebooted and then in X my mouse wasnt working
anymore! So i got mad with xf86cfg cause i couldnt make it work again and
thought of reinstalling the hotplug package from my debian repository, I
did so, but it didnt seem to work anymore, so i just thought of installing
every package i got in return for the "hotplug" search string in
apt-cache. I just had installed "fxload - Firmware download to EZ-USB
devices" and my mouse worked again, but surprisingly enough, on the next
reboot hotplug could at last find the Layla24 firmware!!!
Now, in alsaconf it does not appear to be there. Is it supposed to be like
that?
However in alsamixer i got the Layla24 there, but only with Master and PCM
channels. Same for volume control in gnome.
SDL based apps are not sounding neither noatun which exited with an
error.
Now that the firmware is there, am I missing something?
Thank for all of the support so far and thanks in advance.

The patch is against the official hotplug scripts. You have to look at the
system logs, eg. /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog (look in
/etc/syslog.conf for details).

Summary: Driver cant find firmware for Layla24
Description:
Hello,
After modprobe snd-layla24 ,
in dmesg|tail:
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:0e.0[A] -> GSI 19 (level, low) -> IRQ 19
ALSA /usr/src/alsa-driver-1.0.9b/pci/echoaudio/echoaudio.c:41:

Oh I see
Well I dont have a clue on applying patches... however I search for some
info about it but i guess i didnt succeed at it :(
So I added both lines manually but noticed my file was using a
FIRMWARE_DIRS variable with several directories linked to it rather than a
FIRMWARE_DIR var with a single dir bound to it... So i managed to add them
both modifying them a bit to fit there, but i think the second line wont
fit in context very well(well, probably none of them xD)... I did a
/etc/init.d/alsasound stop ; modprobe -r snd ; modprobe snd-layla24 but
didnt notice anything different in dmesg|tail.
Note that im a newbie Linux user, and dont have the knowledge to perform
such patches correctly; however im willing to learn :) Therefore i have
uploaded my firmware.agent file so you can see for yourself how it looks
like now.
I should mention also that one of the dirs in the variable is empty, but i
dont think its important for the slight glimpse ive had from the script(i
cant write linux scripts yet!), that is the one in the middle:
/usr/local/lib/firmware
Willing to hear from you and thank you again for helping me on this even
when its starting to look like its not related to the driver at all :)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
pochini - 08-08-05 09:22
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The patch is against the official hotplug scripts. You have to look at the
system logs, eg. /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog (look in
/etc/syslog.conf for details).

I didn't know I'm not the official maintainer anymore :))
The driver simply does:
if ((err = request_firmware(fw_entry, name, pci_device(chip))) < 0)
snd_printk(KERN_ERR "get_firmware(): Firmware not available (%d)\n",
err);
return err;
So I don't think there is something wrong there. Btw an other user had a
similar problem some days ago. I quote the relevant part:

It's 17 kb away from empty. Also, firmware.agent seems to complete
successfuly from what I can tell. Lee Revell suggested on alsa-devel
that I should try with 2.6.12 since there have been changes in the
driver model since 2.6.10 (what i'm using). Indeed that seems to have
been the cause of the problem. With 2.6.12 I was able to play audio
nicely.

Hey Oxi,
I've had good experience with alsa-jack and layla20. I hope the bug will
be resolved soon.

I didn't know I'm not the official maintainer anymore :))
The driver simply does:
if ((err = request_firmware(fw_entry, name, pci_device(chip))) < 0)
snd_printk(KERN_ERR "get_firmware(): Firmware not available (%d)\n",
err);
return err;
So I don't think there is something wrong there. Btw an other user had a
similar problem some days ago. I quote the relevant part:

Well, at that time i wasnt able to compile them properly, probably because
of my little knowledge then regarding Linux.
Ow, pity Mr. Pochini isnt supporting them anymore as stated in ALSA matrix
:(
I hope we accomplish our goal by making gentle pressure both, and that a
well experienced coder will move forward and help us out.
It's a real pain not being able to use such cards in this environment, as
in my opinion ALSA has got really powerful possibilities, such as using a
sound server(is it named like that?) like Jack and redirecting any program
i/o s the way you like. No need for plug-ins nor shit... Btw i'd like to
know your opinion regarding this and its usage if you have used it
before(which i guess is a yes?).

The time, when I had to patch the alsa-driver tree and echo-drivers had his
own website, I could use the sound-layla20 without any major problem.
Maybe this helps developpers to resolve the problem?
(Normally I should pick an old alsa-driver tree and patch it with an older
driver, but I can't the old patches anymore)
P.S. I'm the other guy that is experiencing the same problem

Well, is the firmware installed?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
oxi - 08-05-05 04:57
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I dont know, i guess its not!
How would I know? There wasnt a comment pointing to that in the specific
installation instructions for my card. It just said to enable firmware
loading support in the kernel options, which i believe its hotplug. I
thought that would mean it would be able to retrieve the firmware from the
card eprom, as to my knowledge the firmware is usually stored in a device
itself.
Where should i get this and how to install it please? Any help
appreciated! Thank you!

Thank you!
