I found the reason for boot problems, where disk size was zero. Linux ESP driver uses (very rarely) the ESP command Set ATN and Stop, which is in fact not similar to Set ATN command. The way of sending the command seems to be very different. Hmm, this sounds like a partially a Linux bug. The qemu devices only report SCSI-3 rev 1, which doesn't define some of these commands.
