Hi,
first: many thanks for alsa! it is really a good product.

I'm having some troubles with the drivers on an asus w6f (notebook) with an intel 945GM
chipset (lspci -nv at bottom).
1.0.11 kernel drivers stop here:

hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC861, trying auto-probe from BIOS...

while a checkout of drivers from hg repo gives some more informations:

hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC861, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
ALSA /home/ionocatabi/down/alsa-hg/alsa-driver/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:2133: autoconfig: line_outs=1 (0xb/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0)
ALSA /home/ionocatabi/down/alsa-hg/alsa-driver/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:2137: speaker_outs=0 (0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0)
ALSA /home/ionocatabi/down/alsa-hg/alsa-driver/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:2139: hp=0x0, dig_out=0x12, din_in=0x0
ALSA /home/ionocatabi/down/alsa-hg/alsa-driver/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:2147: inputs: mic=0xd, fmic=0x0, line=0x0, fline=0x0, cd=0x11, aux=0x0

but still no luck :(
passing model=asus is of no help, every volume control is up but I can't hear
sound, nor from line-out nor from internal speakers. Sound seems to play but I
can't hear anything.

any clue on this?

thanks in advance,
filippo

ALC861 has the following model option values:

	  3stack	3-jack
	  3stack-dig	3-jack with SPDIF I/O
	  6stack-dig	6-jack with SPDIF I/O
	  auto auto-config reading BIOS (default)

Try model=3stack at first. This was the old default value.

thanks for your quick reply! it works with all of the *stack* models, however in
every model I can't adjust the volume (only PCM slider, no master volume).

Also, the output on lineout is somewhat distorted :| (I noticed that also on
windows btw, I'm suspecting codec problems (?))

It's so. The codec has no hardware volume control.

Try to change "Channel Mode" to "2ch" (flip betwen 2ch and 6ch).
AD1986A had a similar problem when the codec is configured to output 6
channels for 2-channel hardwares, so this might be related, too...
