Hi, all,

I will buy a new computer with Pentium 4 CPU. I will install Linux operating
system, and I wanna run lm_sensor package on this new computer to read
temperature sensor values.

What computer should I buy? I know Dell computer is not well supported from
lm_sensor. Can I buy some models of HP computers? Can I buy the computer
from BestBuy or CircuitCity?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Yongkui

Well Dell is often doing the sensors stuff diferently, so don't buy that for the
lm-sensors. HP? I dont know.

Maybe you can consider buying a computer assembled from "classic" components for
example, with some Asus motherboard. Perhaps you dont need HP or Dell stiker on
your computer anyway...

You dont need to assemble the components yourself, majority of computer shops
offer already built computers from "classic" components.

I hope it helps,

regards
Rudolf

Hi Rudolf,

Thank you very much.

I think I will adopt your suggestions. I can buy a Asus motherboard, and
Pentium 4 cpu, and other computer components.

Could you suggest me one combination of "classic" components? I am not
familiar with motherboards, don't know which Asus motherboards are
"classic".

Thanks!

Hi Rudolf,

Pentium 4 CPU is necessary for me. I cannot use Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 as
the CPU. So I must choose one Asus motherboard which supports Pentium 4 CPU.
Any suggestions?

I found some Asus motherboards which support Pentium 4 on the following
weblinks:
http://motherboards.bizrate.com/motherboards/brand--asus/processor_type--pentium_4/products__att259--43486-__att7--306024-__rf--mot006.html

The following Asus motherboards seems new, which one is the best for me to
run lm_sensors package? I am interested in reading temperature sensor
values with lm-sensors.
ASUS P5ND2-SLI Motherboard<http://motherboards.bizrate.com/motherboards/pid375875100/compareprices.html>
ASUS P4S800D-X Motherboard<http://motherboards.bizrate.com/motherboards/pid298843742/compareprices.html>
ASUS P5LD2 Deluxe
Motherboard<http://motherboards.bizrate.com/motherboards/pid328547032/compareprices.html>
ASUS P5LD2-VM Motherboard<http://motherboards.bizrate.com/motherboards/pid332389047/compareprices.html>

 Thanks!

Look forward to hearing from you.

There are hundreds of Pentium 4 motherboards. And Pentium 4 doesn't
mean much either, as there are at least 6 families of Pentium 4 with
verying sockets.

Don't ask us to choose for you, it doesn't make sense. All we can tell
you is the level of support of a given hardware monitoring chip or a
given SMBus. All the rest is up to you to search.

Hi Jean,

How do you think of this CybertronPC computer. It has a Asus *Asus P5V800-MX
Socket LG775 *motherboard.

Do you think this motherboard supports lm-sensors well? If so, I will
probably buy this computer.

Thanks!

Can't tell for sure without having my hands on it, and nobody ever
reported with that board, but it appears to have an ITE IT8712F
Super-I/O chip, and this chip has hardware monitoring functions and is
perfectly supported for a long time. So I'd say it's OK.

Hi Jean,

Thank you very much for your reply.

You said "but it appears to have an ITE IT8712F Super-I/O chip", could you
please give me a weblink about this? I am interested in finding its
inside chip information for the motherboard.

Thanks!

Yongkui
