Hi,,
Is this the right place to enquire about how to set up my linux machine as a gateway for other linux/windows machines for internet browsing and email.
Do let me know soon.

Sure...
1. Pick a Linux distribution at random.
2. Go to the chosen distribution's FTP site.
3. Download the ISO images for the said distribution.
4. Burn those images to CD-Recordable.
5. Boot from the first installation CD.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Reasonably easy.
Best wishes from Riley.

ELKS will work on i386 but it's targeted for older processor like 8086 and
it's not very useful for end users by now. You have to use GNU/Linux and
find a distribution that is good for you. Some pointers:
http://www.distrowatch.com/
http://www.linuxiso.org/
By the way, this is not a forum for GNU/Linux issues, it's only for ELKS.

EtLinux should be the best solution for you : http://www.etlinux.org
It's developed by an Italian society, PROSA, and it could run in 2 MB RAM and
2 MB of disk space (hard disk, compact flash, smartcard or similar).
Some parts of the system are re-written in TCL in order to save space on disk.
muLinux (http://mulinux.sunsite.dk) needs at least 4 MB RAM and it's based on
Linux 2.0.36; it's really complete and you can use X, SSH, VNC, Java and many
other things on your computer.
SmallLinux (http://www.superant.com/smalllinux/) needs at least 2 MB RAM and
it's based on Linux 2.0.0 : you could do some basilar jobs with it.

Hi,
Linux kernel *runs* on i386 CPU without any modofication so it's not a problem.
You can tweak with configuration settings especially when only low range of
memory included in your machine. But your question is very hard if you can't
give us further information about your needs ...

What Mr. Williams is trying to convey in his own special way :) is that Linux will run on a 386 by default. There are some distros that have been optimized for newer processors, and some distros are more resource hungry than others, but 386 is the oldest processor that supports the memory modes Linux is designed for. What you need is not a port, but just to choose your distribution wisely.
Another possibility to consider is NetBSD, which isn't Linux, but will run in a thimble.
Elks is specifically designed to run on older processors, and this list isn't a general Linux help list. Suggest you find a more mainstream Linux group for help. Try http://www.linuxbeginner.org/ for a start.
Good luck!

386/20mhz with 2meg of ram & a 20 meg drive. Still
have it. Still runs.
I also fool around with ELKS on me ole' Tandy 1000A.
It runs, more or less, although I do not yet have it
working on the hard drive.
Oh. One more thing -

That's certainly an option providing one can satisfy the
Minix licence.

I used to have one, but it went belly up just before I
first came across ELKS so I never had a chance to try it
out on that machine.

I've seen some pretty ugly source code, including some I've
written myself at times, but I still feel the above claim
of mine is correct.
Best wishes from Riley.

Which, IIRC, has been re-licensed on a BSD-like licence.

Hi All,
I tried loading a simple char driver on kernel 2.6 but it is giving invalid
module parameter.
This module is working very fine on kernel 2.4 . The kernel version I am
using is linux-2.6.5-7.97-smp.
I know that the insmod procedure has changed but dont know how to do it.
If anybody know the procedure , kindly tell this to me.
Thanks & regards ,

hi all,
i post here after spoke with people into #iptables irc channel
in particular with "Taube". At the end of my problem explanation
he suggested me to use a script instead of iptables-{save,restore}
commands, but reading iptables tutorial in particular here:
http://iptables-tutorial.frozentux.net/iptables-tutorial.html#SAVEANDRESTORE
i get the advice to use iptables-{save,restore} instead of a bash script...now i
thought to post here...
So now my problem:
Using iptables-{save,restore} on a gentoo box iptables crashes at start up.
my error message(doing /etc/init.d/iptables start):

contents of firewall file(cat /var/lib/iptables/firewall)[i dropped some my comments, starting with

I hope to give you some help to discover bugs(if it's not an error of mine ;) )...and i'm sorry if i
make you lose your time.
Thanks all in advance.

I thought that the main benefit of these script was speed when
saving/restoring rules (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). I don't think
your ruleset is big enough to notice the difference.
If you're having trouble using iptables-[save|restore] then you can create
your own script: it's just a matter of preference.

The most difficult thing speaking with expert linux user is setup the right log_level :D (when you don't post infos other says you: "post same datails...how do you think we can help you without them?", when you post too many datails...)
Anyway thanks for your replay, Rob! ;)
So debug of those tools will be neglected?
Thanks all in particular at Rob

P.S.: the point was not to make my firewall working...the point is understanding why those tools does not work. ;) but if that does not interest at netfilter mailing list...
P.P.S.: sorry for my bad english :P

In fact I wasn't really helping you and for my answer the information was not
relevant; also, your problem didn't go away (yet?). :-)
I was responding to what people suggested and I suggest that if you're having
a problem using iptables-[save|restore] you can write a script that works for
you.

I don't know if it is. (Can't imagine, but this is a user list; not developer)

Well, I'm not using it so no: I'm not really that interested. But others may
be. ;-)
The latest version of iptables is 1.3.6. Since you're using 1.3.5, the latest
version may solve your problem with iptables-[save|restore].

You're right...but before spam into devel ml, i decided to spam here :D
Hearing some expert user is always better ;)

Ok...but before i'll see changelog ;)
Do you think that this problem could be interesting for developers?
Is there some way to let it see at some devel before posting (and probably spamming) on devel
mailing list?

By all means, post it to the netfilter-devel list, but after you tried
1.3.6. If it is a real bug, and it's still there, that is the fastest
way of getting it solved. Apart from fixing it yourself, that is.

Hi,
debian is probably the easiest to install as a domU. Try using debootstrap -
there's a HOWTO in the manual. Other linux versions may be installable using
rpmstrap, or by downloading a tarball from somewhere.
For FreeBSD you'll probably want to download a filesystem image, there's one
somewhere but I can't remember what the URL is - it's in the archives.
FreeBSD 7 from the FreeBSD Perforce repositories has Xen support in it.
Btw, the xen-users list is a better place to ask this sort of question.
Cheers,
Mark

Hi all,
I have the following questions regarding Xen hypervisor. Can you please
clarify these queries?
Does Xen follow any security model, in particular, does a Random Oracle (RO)
fit in Xen?
When there are concurrent Guest OS running on the same hardware, then there
has to be a mechanism for concurrency control and fairness, how does Xen
implement these?
Shared memory access has to make sure that one "malicious" OS doesn't access
other's memory, where and how is this done?
Similarly with shared network, how and where is security handled in this
case so that packets meant for one OS are not accessible to other OS?
Does xen has cryptography implementation in the code ?
If you have idea regarding *"provable security" *property of Xen , can you
give us a gist of it ?
Thanks&Regards,
Aditya Pendyala,

alsa-project/alsa-lib issue #380 was opened from kingjoma:
Hi All
I am a linux noob. After purchasing a SteamDeck and in an attempt to achieve outcomes from first principles I am trying to get MUNT to work with Dosbox 0.74-3 from the flathub repo (??). I successfully grabbed the DosBox flatpak from the Discover Store and successfully downloaded, compiled and installed MUNT using terminal commands. I know that there are Dosbox versions with built in MT-32 support, which I have installed (eg. Dosbox Staging) but in order to understand Linux a bit better am challenging myself to code from first principles. After running the mt32emu-qt command from the terminal and then running:
`aconnect -o`
I am expecting to see
`client 128: 'Munt MT-32' [type=user]
0 'Standard'`
The issue is the line regarding client 128 is blank. MUNT launches, I have the ROMs installed and have tested midi files through MUNT and get sound, but when trying to point
`midiconfig=128:0`
in the dosbox config file, it is not working.
Here are the steps I took to install MUNT, there were dependencies I needed to install and initialise features on SteamOS that are normally not used in vanilla SteamOS builds:
`sudo steamos-readonly disable`
`sudo pacman-key --init`
`sudo pacman-key --populate archlinux`
`sudo pacman-key --populate holo`
`sudo pacman -Syu`
`sudo pacman -S qt5-multimedia`
`sudo pacman -S qt6-multimedia`
`git clone http://www.github.com/munt/munt`
`sudo pacman -S install build-essential`
`sudo pacman -S libgl`
`cmake -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE:STRING=Release`
`make`
`sudo make install`
`mt32emu-qt`
I then added the '/usr/local/lib' path to /etc/ld.so.conf.d to ensure MUNT picked up the local library and then ran
`sudo ldconfig`
Please assist in trying to understand why the MUNT client is not showing up?
Thanks
