1.Probable kernel bug in most recent VT8233 drivers

2. Until my most recent kernel update, sound was working on my system. I'm
running Opensuse 10.2. Now when I reboot I get a message that no sound
drivers are available. When I attempt to reinstall the sound card via Yast,
I get the message:

K7VT2 mobo
The kernel module snd-via82xx for sound support could not be loaded. This can
be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ
parameters.

3. Keywords: ALSA, Via82xx, sound, kernel

4. Kernel version:
Linux version 2.6.18.2-34-default (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 4.1.2
20061115 (prerelease) (SUSE Linux)) #1 SMP Mon Nov 27 11:46:27 UTC 2006

5. Version prior to Nov. 27, I believe.

Hi,

Try to modprobe driver manually and then use dmesg - it will tell you
what is wrong.

Also check /proc/asound/cards file if there is listed your card -
sometimes is modem first card.

modprobe snd_via82xx produces no output

lsmod produces output containing the line

  snd_via82xx 32920 0

dmesg contains the lines

PCI quirk: region 4000-407f claimed by vt8235 PM
PCI quirk: region 5000-500f claimed by vt8235 SMB

and also the lines

pnp: 00:02: ioport range 0x4000-0x407f could not be reserved
pnp: 00:02: ioport range 0x5000-0x500f has been reserved

the output is

0 [V8235 ]: VIA8233 - VIA 8235
                      VIA 8235 with VIA1612A at 0xdc00, irq 217

Hi,

Looks like alsa driver is loaded and it should work.
Is your sound card working. Did you try play something ?

The card is not working. The Yast installer says that the kernel module for
sound support could not be loaded, and I cannot get any sound at all. Even
the alsaconf program, which normally plays when nothing else does, produces
no sound. Its output includes this:

Starting sound driver: via82xx done
/usr/sbin/alsactl: load_state:1236: No soundcards found...

If card is in /proc/asound/cards then driver is loaded and working.
Probably Yast will fail to load driver again, because it is already
loaded.

You have probably problem with dev files. Check if there are dev files
in /dev/snd subdir (I think this is default).

Something like this:

This is getting interesting. I do not have a /dev/snd directory. I tried
reinstalling the devs rpm package, and that recreated /dev/snd, but after a
reboot /dev/snd was gone again.

Here's something else I tried. If having the driver loaded is the problem,
then the problem should go away if I remove it. So I did

rmmod snd_via82xx

which succeeded and caused the entry to disappear, as verified by

lsmod | grep via82

I then retried the Yast installation and got the same error as before. After
that attempt, though, the previous command gave me

snd_via82xx 32920 0

indicating that the Yast installation restored the module. So I would guess
that the module is loaded but is not usable because of the problems indicated
by the original error message (at the beginning of this thread).

I also tried alsaconf again and got this, as before:

Loading driver...
Starting sound driver: via82xx done
/usr/sbin/alsactl: load_state:1236: No soundcards found...

which suggests that even though the driver is loaded, it cannot access the car
(actually part of the motherboard).

This is a bug in your distro. udev is supposed to create those files.

Maybe not -- although if you're right, it's an Opensuse fault, not an error of
my making. But is it possible that the /dev/snd files are created only after
the sound system has been initialized successfully?

I just updated ALSA from version 1.0.10 to version 1.0.13 and -- miracle of

It's because the ALSA udev configuration was moved to alsa.rpm on SUSE
