It would be nice to push this configuration dependency to Kconfig.
Something like:
config SAMPLE_KRETPROBES
default y
depends on SAMPLE_KPROBES
And then in the Makefile have:
obj-$(CONFIG_SAMPLE_KRETPROBES) += kretprobe_example.o
