I received this bug report in the Debian BTS (submitter and bug Cc-ed).

In short statically linking the uml kernel fails with the error below.
Any idea what may be wrong?

The patch itself didn't apply for me (probably because I copy/paste'd it from
the email) but making the change by hand to the Makefile worked and fixed the
problem.
