I can't seem to figure out where to specify the timeout for a direct
mount. It doesn't seem to work as an option in auto.master or
auto.direct.
Anyone know?

I didn't. I'm just not sure where to put the --timeout arg to get to
work for direct mounts.

It's the same as for indirect map entries.
At the end of the line in the master map entry.
/- auto.direct --timeout=180
The question gets more interesting if you have multiple direct map
entries.
