So just where are the official sources for ax25-tools and ax25-apps?

I've been pulling them from Debian and using their patches  since the
Sourceforge project seemed stuck at 0.0.8 and 0.0.6 and Debian had patches
on top of those baselines.  Now I find  that the SuSE hamradio repository is at
0.0.9 for ax25-tools and 0.0.8 for ax25-apps.

I need a non rpm archive somewhere to pull these down from for my openwrt
embedded builds and while I can host my own I'd rather not.

Hi All,

Unfortunately, as you have noticed, there are no more official sources for libax25, ax25-tools and ax25-apps, since 
sourceforge repository has been abandonned.

The sad consequence is an emergence of uncoordinated revisions and packages.
The ones I am aware of are Debian, Suse and mine. But there are others.

Each of them has certainly valuable bug fixes, maybe directed to the same bugs but also correcting different bugs.
Thus it would be a constructive work to perform a general revue of all different patches by discussing them on this list 
  and then restart creating new official versions that could be uploaded to new Linux AX25 site maintained by Ralf DL5RB :

The packages available on this page are from Debian team.

For what it's worth, SourceForge moved to a new datacenter over in
Chicago I think.  Since then their service has been better than ever
before.  Evidently they have better/faster/more servers and a better
infrastructure to support them than they've had in the past.

I contribute to a few projects on SourceForge and have had zero
problems with them since they've moved.  CVS has been blindingly
fast, and even the anonCVS has been synced to the developer's CVS
within just a few seconds after a commit.

Perhaps the SF site could be "unabandoned" and it could be the
official repository again?  It's the first place a lot of people
look for code.

There is a process in place where a member of SourceForge can request a
transfer of the project.  It takes a bit of time as the previous
admin(s) is contacted, if possible.

I've not tried the AX25 tools for about a decade as I have no need for
it here.  I've seen what seems to be differences in configuration
between the distributions that a single distribution of these tools
would be a good first step.

Rgr.  Whatever gets it to a single distribution point that's
reliable long-term.

Agreed.  What Ken's (n7ipb) working on allows web-based
configuration...  That'd be a whole lot easier for new users
wouldn't it?  ;-)

He's not implementing it for ROSE or Net/Rom but has the basic AX.25
stuff working for embedded systems.  He mentioned it was
distribution-agnostic.  With a few extra bits for ax25d and axspawn
and others, it could be the impetus for a whole lot shorter
AX25.HOWTO document/a lot fewer user setup problems.

Would anybody like to have a look at the ncurses-based kernel AX.25
configuration tool "ax25-config" at
<http://sourceforge.net/projects/ax25config>? It's one of those projects I
haven't had any time for (the latest release is over 5 1/2 years old and
by the previous maintainer), but OTOH nobody really gave me any reason to
spend time on it... I also assume a complete rewrite would be best.

So if somebody would like to take over the project (or the project name),
please contact me and I can transfer ownership swiftly (no need to rush to
the SF admins).

As a previous developer (that is a minor contributor) for the linux
ax25 software, I am sorry that the issue has been more confusing than
it ought to be. I have not been running any AX.25 software since about
2003 and don't have an active station to test and evaluate development 
and patch submissions.

Hopefully we can all contribute to moving the linux-ax25 software and
community forward in a productive manner.

If I may be permitted to make a comment or two as a long time ax25 user. 
My bbs has been using ax25 continuously since 1999. I still have six 
ax25 radio ports, use axudp links, and handle telnet, rose, netrom and 
garden variety ax25 on a system that has a bbs, node, and aprs HF and 
VHF Igate. By today's packet standards it is a big system.

As a user rather than a programmer or developer, I consider myself 
unqualified to lodge bug reports because my in-depth knowledge of the 
"inner workings" is insufficient for me to reach a logical conclusion. 
What may appear as a bug may be operator error. I always compile kernel 
ax25, but I know my limitations, even though I push them.

As a user of ax25, however, I am not alone, being one of a considerable 
number of bbs stations in France, the United States and Australia. There 
may be others outside of "my" circle. Every bbs with which I forward 
uses ax25. We all use fpacnode (from f6fbb) which is based on Linuxnode, 
but containing considerable improvements for handling Rose protocol. 
fpacnode also handles Netrom in an almost identical manner to Linuxnode.

What started out as an fpac mailing list seems to have collapsed to just 
four of us exchanging emails.

Bernard f6bvp has taken over ongoing maintenance of xfbb (minor fixes) 
and fpac (good improvements and fixes). Bernard has also released 
patches for kernel ax25 and kernel Rose. The email group of four 
previously mentioned, tend to be beta testers for Bernard's work.

I wonder how many ax25 users (and potential users) there are who aren't 
in the know, and who plod away with broken code, or just give up?

As old as ax25 is, I remain optimistic that it will still be in use for 
many years to come, and I would like to see a return to a coordinated 
approach to maintaining the code.

Am I of any value as a beta tester beyond my current circle for those 
developers who don't have test facilities? I don't know, but I do run a 
number of Linux systems with kernel ax25, so setting up for testing 
something I currently don't use ( axspawn, e.g.) is totally possible, if 
it's of any use and it advances the cause.
