Dear developers,
alsamixer doesn't work on my fedora machine. When I type in 'alsamixer -c 0',
I get
"hda_codec: num-steps=0 for NID=0xf (ctl=Side Playback Volume)"
"alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid argument"
Although Pulseaudio and OSS Mixers seem to be present, I don't get any sound.
Please have a look at http://www.alsa-
project.org/db/?f=15c9f665eb141dee755a533d804456e81442f270
or check the attachment.
I hope you can help me solving my problem.
Regards,
Stephan Jänecke
PS: I had the same mixer problem with Mandriva 2009.0 before I installed
Fedora 10 to check whether it's an distribution specific bug. Whereas
alsamixer didn't work properly as well, I could enjoy working sound.

This looks weird. Could you try the latest alsa-driver snapshot
and see whether you get a better (complete) /proc/asound/card0/codec#*
outputs?
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/tiwai/snapshot/alsa-driver-snapshot.tar.gz
If you still get a strange output, try to load the module with
probe_only=1 option and get the codec proc output.
thanks,
Takashi

Had some free time and replaced Fedora Cambridge by Ubuntu Jaunty.
The codec shows up now:
stephan@intel32ub904:~$ head -n 1 /proc/asound/card0/codec*
Codec: Realtek ALC888
But I'm still unable to run alsamixer:
stephan@intel32ub904:~$ alsamixer -c0
alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid argument
I already tried today's alsa-driver-snapshot, but my problems weren't solved
just by replacing the drivers. I'll need some help configuring them when it
points out that they are the cause of my troubles.
Have a look at http://www.alsa-
project.org/db/?f=dc5b8f157a91a9f9d3edbd948a0c581ab5d60bd1 or at alsa-info-
ubuntu in the attachment.
Any help is welcome. :)
Greetings,
Stephan

Make sure you don't use pulse plugin. That is, run
% alsamixer -Dhw:0

The alsa-info you attached isn't for the latest alsa-driver snapshot.
Please post the latest one.
Also, check the kernel messages.

After a long time the drivers shipped with Ubuntu 9.04 worked, it suddenly
died today and pulseaudio just outputed the sound to the null device. So I
compiled the driver-snapshot again, Takashi gave me, and now it magically
works including alsamixer.
But there are two problems left:
1. Every time I use alsa tools, I get a warning at the beginning: WARNING: All
config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, it will be ignored in a
future release.
2.saa7134-alsa isn't loadable anymore. According to dmesg the driver wasn't
updated with the driver snapshot. Is it included in the current one?
PS: alsa-info.txt and dmesg-output are attached.
Greetings,
Steve
