My DWA-642 is up and running ping but no wakeup interrupt is seen by powertop in both power save on or off as I see for wired line ethernet and Intel wifi.
Does ath9k do some thing to block it?

define "no wakeup interrupt". Are you talking about PCI PME messages?

Have you verified rfkill button hasn't been set to off?
