No, the tarball haven't got it.
I took the link from
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download#Where_to_download_bleeding_edge
 i.e.
http://wireless.kernel.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2but
there is no ath9k_htc driver in it.

You can use

./scripts/driver-select ath9k_htc

The ath9k_htc has stil to be added to the README.
It compiles and after the make install i rebooted and tryed to plug the usb
dongle.
It is a TP Link TL-WN722N (it has got the same chipset of the WN721N).
I am under ubuntu 9.10 2.6.31-21-generic. I have another atheros card in
this system (it uses the ath5k module). I removed the package
linux-backports-modules-karmic before compiling but the module doesnt seem
to work. Am I wrong in someting?
This is the output I got:

sudo modprobe ath9k_htc
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, it will be
ignored in a future release.
WARNING: Error inserting ath9k_common
(/lib/modules/2.6.31-21-generic/updates/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath9k/ath9k_common.ko):
Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
WARNING: Error inserting mac80211

(/lib/modules/2.6.31-21-generic/updates/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath9k/ath9k_htc.ko):

And this is the dmesg output:
[ 190.524171] usb 1-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address

[ 243.301310] ath9k_hw: Unknown symbol ath_regd_get_band_ctl

Thank you very much for your work.

Please provide the output of:

for i in ath9k_hw ath9k_common ath9k ath9k_htc ; do modprobe -l $i; done

The idea is all of these should be on the same path.

ath9k_htc is for USB devices, a different core driver was required as
the USB devices need to sleep during every read/write. We could
technically merge the two driver cores together if we implement a
threaded ISR on ath9k and then offload most work to workqueues
instead. My hope was that we could try to do this eventually in the
long run and stuff the common mac80211 helpers possible into
ath9k_common.

Right now ath9k_htc and ath9k do share the same harware code, through ath9k_hw.

This is the output:

updates/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath9k/ath9k_hw.ko
updates/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath9k/ath9k_common.ko
updates/cw/ath9k.ko
updates/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath9k/ath9k_htc.ko

Btw when I compiled, I run ./scripts/driver-select ath9k_htc. I didnt care
about the ath9k driver, should I have done it?

This is from the ubuntu compat-wireless, you still haven't removed it.
Just do this:

sudo rm -rf /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/updates/cw/
sudo depmod -a

Um, selecting ath9k_htc should compile ath9k as well for now.

I removed compat-wireless definitively then to be sure I compiled the whole
driver packet and rebooted.
Anyway now I got another problem.
This is the dmesg output after I plugged the dongle and probed the module:

[ 268.909124] usb 1-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address
5
[ 269.057294] usb 1-5: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[ 269.062448] usb 1-5: firmware: requesting ar9271.fw
[ 269.087511] usb 1-5: ath9k_htc: Firmware - ar9271.fw not found
[ 269.087543] ath9k_hif_usb: probe of 1-5:1.0 failed with error -22

What's wrong with the firmware?

This is the output of "for i in ath9k_hw ath9k_common ath9k ath9k_htc ; do
modprobe -l $i; done"
updates/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath9k/ath9k_hw.ko
updates/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath9k/ath9k_common.ko
updates/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath9k/ath9k.ko
updates/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath9k/ath9k_htc.ko

They are all in the same directory.

Thank you for your time.

I see just now about the firmware section on the README and I found from
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/ath9k_htc how to get it in here
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/dwmw2/linux-firmware.git . However
I cant find the file ar9271.fw there and even if I find it, I would not know
where to put it.

The firmware can be downloaded from:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/dwmw2/linux-firmware.git;a=tree

It has to be placed in /lib/firmware.
I have updated the wiki, please check it.

Thanks so much for this driver, it's working flawlessly. Only one minor problem was "Michael MIC failure detected", changing to AES helped.
I don't know if what I've done is correct, in order to recognize my card (TL-WN422G v2) I've added "ATH9K_FW_USB_DEV(0x1006, "ar9271.fw")," to "ath9k_hif_usb_ids[]", and changed "#define AR9271_USB 0x9271" to "#define AR9271_USB 0x1006", is this the right thing to do ?

Not sure if Sujith's patch posted yesterday would fix this.

I applied it, and I've also added this patch http://marc.info/?l=linux-wireless&m=126985782708016&w=4, but it's not enough. I still need to have #define AR9271_USB 0x1006 in hw.h.
