Hi all!
According to feature matrix http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FeatureMatrix kms on GeForce FX 5200 is supported, but on my system it's not working. I've tried with fedora 14 and k/ubuntu 10.10, but the screen is blank and the system is freezed (the monitor is connected as vga). If I set nomodeset option boot, the system boots ok. Any hope? many thanks.

It should work. Please post your kernel logs from a failed boot (they are
somewhere in /var/log).

when boot fails (and system crashes), it write nothing in /var/log: there are only logs of the previous successful boot (with nomodeset option).
my procedure:
1- boot without nomodeset: system crashes.
2- boot with another linux distribution, then I mount partition of point 1, but in /mnt/var/log there are no logs of failed boot. It wrote nothing.
So, I don't know how get logs from a failed boot. If there is a guide, I'm eager to read it. Many thanks.

The most successful method is netconsole.

If you don't feel like setting up a netconsole, at least show us the
output from "dmesg", Xorg.0.log and "lspci -vv" after a successful
boot. That alone may tell us something (no guarantees, if you really
want to find out what's going on netconsole is your best bet).

thanks!
I failed setting up netconsole on opensuse and on fedora, but I've set it up successfully on ubuntu. I've updated initrd.img in order to load netconsole module, and the curious thing is that now ubuntu doesn't crash anymore. I don't know if kms is working properly because I can't run Xorg with nouveau drivers (no screen found), but it works only with proprietary drivers.
Anyway, kernel logs in attachment. (and xorg.log)
