Cmd line: tar zxf ~/linux-2.5.46.tar.gz && cd linux-2.5.46 && tar zxf
~/linux-2.5.46.tar.gz && cd ../ && strace rm -rf linux-2.5.46/ 2>
~/rm.log && ls -al
I think this last ls is what gave me a segfault when this command
completed.
The last 'ls' is because I wanted to see if a linux-2.5.46/ directory
remained unremoved, as once before a subdir went untouched, I was trying
to duplicate that situation. I also had 1000000 empty files in that
directory, recently created. The oops is in the attached dmesg.log.

I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally want to test reiser4 - but i have
this problem:
modprobe reiser4:
FATAL: Error inserting reiser4
(/lib/modules/2.6.7-mm4/kernel/fs/reiser4/reiser4.ko): Unknown symbol in
module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
dmesg:
...
reiser4: Unknown symbol __pagevec_release
reiser4: Unknown symbol pagevec_lookup_tag
reiser4: Unknown symbol __iget
I downloaded the 2.6.7 kernel and patched it with the 2.6.7-mm4 patch.
Then i downloaded reiser4-2004.06.30-09.12-linux-2.6.7-mm4.diff.gz
from http://www.namesys.com/auto-snapshots/
What is the problem???
And how can I help in testing the new filesystem?
/ronni

Do you have the latest version of the module_init__tools and modutils?

exporting of those symbols should help to build reiser4 as a module.

Thanks for report
next auto-snapshot will fix it
for now you can add
EXPORT_SYMBOL(__get);
EXPORT_SYMBOL(__pagevec_release);
EXPORT_SYMBOL(pagevec_lookup_tag);
after definitions of those functions

Just upgraded to module-init-tools-3.1-pre4 - no difference :-(

Added
EXPORT_SYMBOL(__iget);
in fs/inode.c
and
EXPORT_SYMBOL(__pagevec_release);
EXPORT_SYMBOL(pagevec_lookup_tag);
in mm/swap.c
And now it works - thanx :-)

Yup, I thought it was dropped.
Do you know if Andrew/Linus are planning to merge it in mainline anytime soon ?
Thanks you.

Transparent compression has nothing with tail packing.
Cryptcompress file plugin doesn't operate with tails/extents.
This is a different file plugin, that can be considered as another
file system, which uses the same low-level code (nodes,
balancing, etc).
Tails/extents are a business of (default) unix-file plugin,
whereas cryptcompress file plugin operates only with so-called
"ctail items", which look mostly like tails, but ain't merged at
logical cluster boundaries, plus some other peculiar properties.
If compression is enabled, then in default mode management
will be passed to unix-file plugin with "notail" policy, as soon
as some heuristic detects, that file is incompressible. See
http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:TkVTWciE3F8J:www.namesys.com/cryptcompress_design.html
for details.

Hi all.
I have a few questions.
1, fs reiser4 is limited by file size
2, is there any connection between the reiser4 and SATA disk
3, I formatted disk partition with the command
# mkfs.reiser4-o create = ccreg40, compress = gzip1
and the system seems slower to me. Is this possible?
Thanks
Milan

This doesn't seem like a very good filesystem benchmark.
Did you deliberately enable gzip1 compression? Presumably that would
affect performance. But I think you need to find a better way to measure it.

Much of it I understand. I'm not a programmer.
#if BITS_PER_LONG==32
#define MAX_LFS_FILESIZE (((u64)PAGE_CACHE_SIZE << (BITS_PER_LONG-1))-1)
#elif BITS_PER_LONG==64
#define MAX_LFS_FILESIZE 0x7fffffffffffffffUL
#endif
