Hey James,
I just installed a Windows 7 Home Premium version under QEMU (xen-unstable)
with a 2.6.38 dom0. Installing and running it under QEMU works quite well.
I decided to install the PV drivers and followed the criteria for
allowing self-signed drivers to be installed:
Bcdedit.exe -set TESTSIGNING ON
And then I tried to install the non-debug and debug version of the
GPL drivers. The version I picked was 0.11.0.238 - and it just sits
there doing nothing. The Windows 7 install is stock + Kaspersky AntiVirus 2011 +
Everest Ultimate. Both of them (non-debug and debug) hang at the same point.
Any ideas what I ought to try? Where are the log files for the install located?

I think I've seen this once before but couldn't reproduce it. The
installer waits for all the devices to be ready before asking for a
reboot, otherwise you'll end up with the 0x7B "boot device inaccessible"
BSoD next boot.
When it is hung like that, can you go into device manager and tell me
what xen devices are loaded?
Thanks
James

Nothing shows up as Xen. I ran Lavasys Everest to do a report and scanned
for anything that said 'Xen'. The only things I found were the DMI fields.
Interestingly enough, if I click "Cancel" it is still hung. Are there
any installation logs of what it tried to load/install?

It does Cancel, just takes a bit of time. Found out that running
the installer with /l* Logfile.txt did the trick and saw this:
.. snip..

And sure enough I did not have a Xen PCI platform device.
The reason being that I had this in my guest configuration file:
#-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Enable/disable xen platform PCI device, default=1 (enabled)
xen_platform_pci=0
Changing it to 1 made the installer work. After two reboots
my Windows 7 guest is running with the PV drivers.

Is that a safe way to temporarily disable gplpv? If we hide the
platform device then gplpv shouldn't start, correct?

Hmmm... the driver will still load, and will try to disable the qemu
devices. If xen_platform_pci=0 disables the qemu device disabling
mechanism then it may work.
Otherwise, putting /NOGPLPV in your boot.ini (or BCD) or just booting in
safe mode should do the trick.

Konrad,
What version of Xen are you running? Just curious because I had to perform 2
reboots with Win2k8 R2 under Xen 3.1. James and I concluded this was because
of the version of Xen I was running.
Thanks,
AP

Uhh, in my case Windows was telling me that I needed to restart. I think the drivers
installed themselves fine (it had the icon saying it installed them).

Yes, it was Windows asking me to reboot too. Except that only one reboot
should have been required given that it was R2.
