Hello everyone,
I noticed today that Nokia is taking applications for N950 devkits. This
devkit is special because it runs Meego. Meego being a purer linux stack vs
android.
My thoughts being that a hardware meego device would be helpful for CPD on
mobile and I would like to investigate the meego printing stack. Personally
I want to see Meego succeed because it is very similar to linux as we know
on it on the desktop and as such the development environment is very similar
to what you would use for QT on the desktop.
Nokia is offering these units with the intention of filling the meego app
store. I have an application that is almost ready to be shipped so I've
applied for a load unit hopfully that is good enough to get a unit.
I know Intel had dev units of native meego hardware a while ago, did anyone
get one of these? Has anyone had contact with the meego project or
experience with their printing stack?
Daniel

I have had a little contact with Intel's Meego team manager but I do not have
any technical details. I am under the impression that Intel sort of backed
away from meego when Nokia went with WinPhone. I do know that Intel stopped
hiring programmers to work on meego about that time.
I would expect that the printing stack at the UI level is the more or less
stock Qt components but the lower levels of that stack I don't know. I am
under the impression that the Intel/Nokia deal was that Intel would do all of
the apps and UI stuff and Nokia would do all of the systems stuff.

Yeah reality is not being very kind to linux on the mobile. We might have to
wait until 2012 to celebrate the year of linux on the mobile.
Nokia's switch to windows likely did cause problem for Intel, but publicly
Intel has said that they are still committed. Personally my take is that
Intel has heavy interests in Meego succeeding. With mobiles encroaching on
laptops and Win 8 shipping on ARM Intel wants their chips on mobile devices.
So far the only mobile devices using intel's stuff have been Win7 tablets.
Android works on x86 but ARM system on chips dominate android development.
Nokia may be gone as a long term proponent but they should ship a few
million units of their N9. I also hold out hope that Nokia switches back to
Meego. Their Win7 phones are a ways off and their current options for
smartphones are to ship more symbian or ship another meego after the N9.
Win7 phone isn't exactly doing well either, Samsung's Bada is already
outselling it.
The future will definitely be interesting to see what happens in the mobile
space. I doubt meego will displace Android or iOS with Nokia gone but I
think Meego will be able to carve out a niche.

I haven't looked at Meego, but it appears to have CUPS in the Core Software
Platform, but whether that's also in the Mobile profile I don't know. The api
would definately be Qt however.
That said, you don't need specific hardware to try out printing in Meego, it
runs fine in a VM. Hardware is really only needed if you're doing stuff that
requires the touch-screen or other hardware features.

Well, I know they are hiring people in Oslo from Nokia to work on Qt for
Meego, and the story they are telling those of us in the Qt community is they
are still as committed as they were before the Elopocalypse. In fact, they
almost seemed relieved that Nokia has backed off as it allows Meego to develop
more openly and naturally rather being rushed into the role of saviour of
Nokia.

Actually, my impression is it's a mixture, Intel doing the core OS and x86
support, Nokia doing arm support and the Qt api to wrap around the core, and
both sides using Qt to create their own UX for their own products. Nokia are
certainly not contributing anything to the reference UX's as their one is/was
top-secret.
Anyway, directly related to this is that I've just got back from the Qt
Contributors Summit where I lead a session on the future of printing in Qt,
but I'll start a separate thread for that.
Cheers!
John.
