Please note that we are using a different way of selecting who will get
invites this year; please read below, subscribe to the
ksummit-2012-discuss mailing list, and send an [ATTEND] request to the
mailing list if you are interested in attending.
Do feel free to forward this other mailing lists (especially if there
are internal kernel development lists at your company) if appropriate.
Many thanks,
- Ted
The annual Kernel Summit for 2012 will be held on the 3 days preceding the
Linux Foundation LinuxCon and Linux Plumbers Conference at the Sheraton San
Diego Hotel and Marina from 27-29 August:
http://www.linuxplumbersconf.org/2012/
https://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/linuxcon
The format of the Kernel Summit will be
Monday: All Kernel Developers Plenary Sessions
Tuesday: Kernel technical working and breakout sessions
Wednesday: Additional Technical sessions shared with Plumbers
This year, in order to make the selection process more transparent,
we're trying a new mechanism where we'll be selecting this year's
attendees from amongst those who submit proposals to attend as
described below.
We'll try to cap attendance at around 80-100 for the all kernel
developers day, so get your request in early. To request a place to
attend, please send an email to
ksummit-2012-discuss@lists.linuxfoundation.org
Please summarize what expertise you will bring to the meeting,
and what you'd like to discuss. Please also tag your email with
[ATTEND] so there's less chance of it getting lost in the large
mail pile.
Requests to attend will be looked upon more favorably if you also
participate in the discussion of topics at
ksummit-2012-discuss@lists.linuxfoundation.org
You can subscribe via mailman:

How many calls will there be? How long do we have to respond? If those of us who happen to be on vacation now (getting out of the way well before the kernel summit), want to delay thinking about a proposal until we're back at work, is that OK, or might we miss out? > > This year, in order to make the selection process more transparent, ... and I really am having trouble figuring out how this makes it more "transparent". It certainly makes it more noisy. And maybe that is a good thing. There does seem to be more content on the list this time and that is at least partly good. But is it more transparent? For transparency we would need to see how the selection process will work - when the closing date is, how the proposals will be assessed etc. Will the committee's deliberations be public? Will there be an appeal process? If not, then the process isn't really transparent. But this doesn't bother me as I think transparency is over-rated. I'd much rather have competent leadership than transparent leadership, and assuming the committee is the same as previous years (was the committee membership announced? I didn't see it) then I have no doubts about their competence. So keep up the good work, but if transparency is really what you want then I think you need a little more than just asking people to justify their places. One issue that I sometimes have with KS is that it often coincides with (or falls very close to) Korean Thanksgiving which is 15th day of 8th month on the lunar calendar which, this year, falls on Sept 30th. This is one of the two biggest traditional holidays in Korea (three day holiday thing w/ a lot of the population moving for family gatherings) making traveling for conferences somewhat difficult. Interestingly, China doesn't seem to have that as thanksgiving but moon festival, which may be a smaller deal and the population affected by this schedule may be too small to matter. Is it just me? Any other Koreans coming to KS this year?. Depending on the number of people affected and if at all possible, it would be nice to avoid such big holidays. So, have fun, guys. Thanks. -- tejun ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 9+ messages in thread

It's much less now but majority of the population used to travel to their hometowns over Thanksgiving much like the lunar new year in China, but even then, even if you travel one end to the other, taking more than a day was extremely rare. The land is at most slightly above 500km across after all, so it's usually three (or maybe four or five) day deal over here. I kinda want to try the 1.5 month thing tho. :) -- tejun ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 9+ messages in thread

We have Moon Festival (Sept 30th this year) and fortunately it impacts far less than the Spring Festival, whose travel experiences are horrible: Spring Festival travel season http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chunyun http://english.peopledaily.com.cn/mediafile/201201/08/F201201081134452033422106.jpg The period usually begins 15 days before the Lunar New Year's Day and lasts for around 40 days. The number of passenger journeys during the Chunyun period has exceeded the population of China, hitting over 2 billion in 2008.[1] It has been called the largest annual human migration in the world.[12] linux.conf.au happens to be in that period... > by this schedule may be too small to matter.
