for an intel atom multicore platform, I don't know the added value to
switch to v3?

When v3 is released, v2 will enter maintenance, new features will
not be added, probably only bug fixes and adaptation to new versions
of the I-pipe patches will take place. Right now, in fact, most
of the development effort go to v3.
