Greg,
I am working on a patch series that may need to be stable at some point.
There are pre-reqs but one of the pre-reqs might need to be different in the older kernels.
How is the best way to handle that situation?
I might be able to split the problematic patch...

Did you read the documentation on how to submit a patch to the stable
kernel tree? It should answer this.
You can also just provide the needed backported patches to the mailing
list after the patch has hit Linus's tree, that works well too.
