Handle the demuxed ID register CCSIDR_EL1 as part of the
idregs array. V3 of this series was posted here:
https://lore.kernel.org/qemu-devel/20260622135627.40573-1-sebott@redhat.com/

Changes V3->V4:
* added R-B from Eric
* incorporated suggestions from Eric

Cornelia Huck (3):
  arm: handle demuxed ID registers
  arm: handle CCSIDR_EL1 as a demuxed register
  arm/kvm: get demuxed ID registers from kvm

From: Cornelia Huck <cohuck@redhat.com>

For some registers, we do not have a single ID register, but actually
an array of values (e.g. CCSIDR_EL1, where the actual value is
determined by whatever CSSELR_EL1 points to.) If we want to avoid
using a different way to handle registers like that for every
instance, we should provide some kind of infrastructure. Therefore,
add accessors {GET,SET}_IDREG_DEMUX that are similar to the accessors
we already use for regular ID registers.

Hi; there's no description in this cover letter of
what the series is trying to accomplish. Could you
explain a bit what the motivation is, please?

thanks

Sure!

"
To support efforts to generalize handling of writable System ID Registers
[1] this series addresses the demuxed registers that are kept outside of
ARMISARegisters namely CSSELR_EL1.

CSSELR_EL1 is moved within ARMISARegisters and accessors to retrieve
and set the demuxed values are provided. Initial values are gathered via
the usual KVM_GET_ONE_REG ioctl.
"

Thanks,
Sebastian

You might use

[diff]
        orderFile = scripts/git.orderfile

in your .git/config
to get your diffs sorted by file categories

Still I would document in the commit msg you kept the existing size of
16 although this might be extended in the future to 32: 8 levels x 2
value Ind  x 2 value TnD = 32

I wonder whether that patch is needed at this point. Were previous
ccsidr[i] initialized from KVM before? What is the actual motivation to
read them in this series. Doesn't it bring the risk to expose new values
to the guest?

For instance, in [RFC PATCH v6 11/17] arm/kvm: Initialize all writable
ID registers from host, I generalized the initialization of all writable
id regs and I noticed that the new initialization of CLIDR from KVM
broke the execution (which is not the case for the CCSIDR because I did
it a try) because CLIDR was previously uninitialized and null.

Thanks

Eric

Nope. They were not.

Consistency I guess. Qemu maintains a view of the register values as
seen by the guest. This patch does the same for the demuxed regs.

I don't see how. We obtain register values from kvm, we don't modify
them nor write them back.

I'm currently playing around with that..

Thanks,
Sebastian

The issue is holes in arm64_id_regs[] and we stumble over that in
get_host_cpu_idregs(). Maybe we could skip the demuxed regs when we
iterate over that array.

Sebastian
