This series adds bindings and a codec driver for the Qualcomm WCD9378,
found on SM7635 boards such as the Fairphone 6. The chip pairs a
WCD937x-compatible analog core with SDCA function blocks whose built-in
sequencers handle the analog power-up/down; all control registers,
analog core included, sit in a 32-bit paged SDCA control address space
behind the TX SoundWire slave.
The driver implements the TX/capture paths (three ADCs fed from four
analog microphone inputs, three mic bias supplies) and is modeled on
wcd937x, reusing the wcd-common helpers. RX/playback, MBHC and the
SmartAMP function are follow-up work. Register sequences come from the
GPL downstream wcd9378 driver in Qualcomm's audio-kernel-ar tree; the
chip has no public datasheet.
The slave binding is now a single file covering both presentations of
the chip: the two-slave mobile wiring this driver handles, and the
aggregated single-slave SDCA mode of compute platforms, targeted by
Srinivas's pending SDCA class series. Agreed with Srinivas in that
series' review so it can drop its own binding file and the two drivers
can share the SoundWire ID table:
https://lore.kernel.org/all/06aef9a5-7e8e-4262-9b41-a9c43f588da9@oss.qualcomm.com/
Two dependencies outside this series, both routed through the
soundwire tree:
- the paged register map needs the Qualcomm controller's SCP address
paging support, already applied there as commit 999f80904763
("soundwire: qcom: add SCP address paging support"). Any order works;
capture just needs both to land.
- v2 has the SoundWire core program the codec's bus-clock base/scale
registers (prop.clock_reg_supported) instead of hand-rolling the
writes, following Pierre-Louis's v1 review. On Qualcomm controllers
the core can only do that once the bus declares its clock:
https://lore.kernel.org/linux-sound/20260728173542.61146-1-jorijnvdgraaf@catcrafts.net/
Ordering matters for this one: with this series but without that
patch, slave initialization on Qualcomm buses fails at enumeration
("no bus MCLK") and the codec binds with its bus-clock registers
unprogrammed, i.e. dead capture; it needs to land first or together
with this.
Tested on the Fairphone 6 (SM7635) together with the two soundwire
patches above: handset mic capture through the LPASS TX macro at
48 kHz across reboots, including UCM-driven use by PipeWire in a
Plasma Mobile session. The board DTS follows once these bindings are
accepted.
v2:
- the micbias4-requirement patch is squashed into the binding patch
(Krzysztof)
- one slave binding for both chip presentations (see above), with
qcom,{tx,rx}-port-mapping replaced by qcom,port-mapping plus a
qcom,control-device flag, the channel-mapping properties dropped,
and the codec example trimmed per Rob's review
- driver: single entry point declining qcom,compute-mode nodes;
bus-clock and runtime-PM rework from Pierre-Louis's review; Kconfig
style fixes from Julian Braha's review; sashiko-bot's tx_mode_put
and mutex_destroy items
- rebased; per-patch changelogs have the details

The Qualcomm WCD9378 is a standalone audio codec IC found on SM7635
boards such as the Fairphone 6. Like the WCD937x/938x/939x codecs it
presents RX and TX SoundWire slave devices controlled by a common
parent node, so the parent binding references qcom,wcd93xx-common.yaml.
The WCD9378 has three ADCs and three mic bias supplies and thus no
qcom,micbias4-microvolt, which the common schema required: move that
requirement into the current users, keeping their status quo, and
reject the property here.
The slave devices enumerate with manufacturer ID 0x0217 and part ID
0x0110, hence the sdw20217011000 compatible. Compute platforms wire
the same chip as a single aggregated slave in SDCA mode, which owns
the codec resources itself and has no parent node. The slave binding
covers both presentations: qcom,compute-mode marks the aggregated
slave and gates the properties for the resources it owns,
qcom,control-device marks the slave owning the control register space
(the TX slave in mobile mode), and qcom,port-mapping carries the port
map of either kind of slave.
The -codec suffix in the parent compatible follows the existing
qcom,wcd93xx/pm4125 family compatibles and matches the compatible
shipped by production devicetrees for this chip.

v2:
- squashed v1's separate qcom,wcd93xx-common patch into this one, as
Krzysztof asked; no changes to that part.
- one slave binding for both chip presentations, as agreed in the
review of Srinivas's SDCA class series (link in the cover letter);
Srinivas added as binding maintainer. The aggregated SDCA-mode slave
is marked qcom,compute-mode, which gates the properties for the
resources it owns (supplies, reset GPIO, mic-bias voltages,
#sound-dai-cells).
- the split qcom,{tx,rx}-port-mapping properties are replaced by a
single qcom,port-mapping; with one name for both slaves, the new
qcom,control-device flag marks the slave that owns the control
register space. The mapping stays optional and loses the per-item
enum, following qcom,wcd938x-sdw.yaml.
- qcom,{tx,rx}-channel-mapping dropped, answering Srinivas's v1
question: the slave-side map is fixed in the driver and no board
needs to remap the master side; they can return with a board that
does.
- the codec binding's example drops the two slave-node examples
duplicated from qcom,wcd9378-sdw.yaml, as Rob asked.
- qcom,port-mapping length pinned per mode (5 mobile / 8 SDCA)
through the existing if/then block.

The Qualcomm WCD9378 is the audio codec found on SM7635 boards such as
the Fairphone 6. It pairs a WCD937x-compatible analog core with SDCA
function blocks (SmartMIC0/1/2, SmartJACK, SmartAMP) whose built-in
sequencers perform the analog power-up/down autonomously: capture is
started by programming the ADC usage mode, requesting power state 0 on
the function's power domain entity and letting the sequencer ramp the
ADC and the mic bias selected through SMx_MB_SEL.
Like the other codecs of the family the WCD9378 presents two SoundWire
slaves (manufacturer 0x0217, part 0x0110); a platform device created
from the codec DT node acts as component master over the two slave
devices, reusing the wcd-common helpers. Unlike the older family
members, all control registers - the SDCA function blocks and the
analog core alike - live in a 32-bit paged SDCA control address space
accessed through the TX slave, so the slave regmap needs
prop.paging_support (on Qualcomm controllers this in turn needs SCP
address paging support in the controller driver). The sequencers clock
off the SoundWire bus clock and stall without the SCP bus-clock
base/scale indication; the slaves declare prop.clock_reg_supported so
the core programs those registers at enumeration (on Qualcomm
controllers this in turn needs the controller driver to declare the
bus clock in prop.mclk_freq).
Compute platforms wire the same chip as a single aggregated SDCA-mode
slave instead; probe declines nodes marked qcom,compute-mode, so an
SDCA class driver for that presentation can share the SoundWire ID
table with this driver.
Two hardware behaviours deserve a note:
- The SDCA function engine does not survive SoundWire bus clock-stop.
Every register keeps its value (so a regcache sync restores
nothing), but the sequencers ignore all subsequent power requests,
including forced trigger and soft-reset writes; only a codec reset
revives the engine. The downstream stack sidesteps this by marking
the TX SoundWire master "qcom,is-always-on" in its devicetree; do
the equivalent and hold a runtime PM reference on the TX slave for
as long as the codec is bound. The FUNC_ACT class-load activation
is likewise done with plain writes rather than update_bits so the
0->1 activation edge always reaches the wire regardless of
regcache state.
Scoping the reference to active capture and reviving the engine
with a codec reset on runtime resume was considered and rejected
for now: the reset tears down every SDCA function (including
future jack-detection state), forces re-enumeration of both slaves
and adds the ~65 ms class-load ritual to each capture start.
System sleep is untested and will need a reset-based recovery on
resume, since a runtime PM reference does not prevent clock-stop
across system suspend; that is a known limitation of this patch.
- The TX analog gain field steps 1.5 dB per code (+30 dB over the
0..20 range), measured acoustically on a Fairphone 6 against a
fixed reference tone. The downstream wcd9378 driver corroborates
this: its TLV declares a 0..30 dB min/max over the same range, and
so does mainline wcd938x. (The wcd937x and wcd939x drivers declare
0.25 dB steps for the equivalent field; whether that is correct
for those chips has not been verified here.)
Only the TX/capture paths (ADC1-3 fed from AMIC1-4, mic bias 1-3) are
implemented; RX/playback, MBHC and the SmartAMP function can be added
on top. The RX slave and a playback DAI are still registered: the
codec is one component master over both slaves (the power topology
and device links need the RX device bound), and registering both DAIs
now keeps the DAI indices stable for machine drivers once playback
lands. The ADC input muxes expose the full hardware routing;
combinations not covered by any of the chip's 13 canned sys-usage
profiles are rejected at sequencer power-up.
Register sequences are derived from the GPL downstream wcd9378 driver
in Qualcomm's audio-kernel-ar tree.
Verified on the Fairphone 6: handset mic capture through the LPASS TX
macro at 48 kHz, repeated across reboots, including UCM-driven use by
PipeWire in a Plasma Mobile session.

v2, following the v1 reviews:
- probe returns -ENODEV for nodes marked qcom,compute-mode, keeping a
single sdw_driver and modalias for the chip's two presentations as
agreed with Srinivas (link in the cover letter); the aggregated
SDCA-mode slave will be served by his SDCA class driver. The
common-module factoring discussed there is deferred until his
series lands code to share; this single sdw_driver is the agreed
entry point.
- the TX role comes from qcom,control-device and the port map from the
single qcom,port-mapping; the channel-mapping parsing is dropped
with the binding properties, making the channel-info tables const
(supersedes the devm-copy promised in the sashiko-bot triage).
- bus-clock indication reworked per Pierre-Louis's review: the
hand-rolled SCP base/scale/commit writes and their defines are
deleted; the slaves declare prop.clock_reg_supported so the core
programs the registers at enumeration, and bank switches go through
the family's wcd_bus_config helper. On Qualcomm controllers this
depends on the bus declaring mclk_freq - see the cover letter for
ordering.
- runtime PM per Pierre-Louis's review: init moved before
component_master_add_with_match, converted to
pm_runtime_use_autosuspend + devm_pm_runtime_set_active_enabled,
autosuspend delay raised to 3 s, the remove()-path PM calls and the
sdw-probe pm_runtime_set_suspended (dead on every path) dropped.
- FUNC_STAT sticky bits are cleared through a named mask that spares
FUNCTION_BUSY, as sound/soc/sdca does (Pierre-Louis).
- comments promised in Pierre-Louis's review round: sys-usage
semantics, class-load step labels, the probe/bind flow at the codec
probe, and where the slaves' runtime PM is handled, on the sdw
remove path.
- tx_mode_put rejects out-of-range enum values; mutex_destroy moved
from unbind to remove (sashiko-bot).
- Kconfig: conditional-dependency style and attribute grouping
(Julian Braha).
- "SDCA-style" tightened to SDCA; comment for the vendor
bus-interface registers in the direct address space.

+ *
+ * The WCD9378 pairs a WCD937x-compatible analog core with SDCA
+ * function blocks (SmartMIC0/1/2, SmartJACK, SmartAMP) whose built-in
+ * sequencers perform the analog power-up/down autonomously: capture is
+ * started by programming the ADC usage mode (ITxx_USAGE), requesting
+ * power state 0 on the function's PDE, and letting the sequencer ramp
+ * the micbias selected through SMx_MB_SEL. The sequencers are a vendor
+ * layer behind the SDCA-shaped controls: a power-state request starts
+ * an autonomous multi-step analog program, rather than the plain byte
+ * accesses of generic SDCA.
+ *
+ * TX/capture paths only for now; RX (earpiece/headphone), MBHC and the
+ * SmartAMP function are not implemented.

Thank you for your contribution! Sashiko AI review found 3 potential issue(s) to consider:
- [High] Unvalidated port mapping values read from the device tree are used as array indices, leading to a heap out-of-bounds write.
- [Medium] Asynchronous pm_runtime_put() is used on the TX device immediately before component unbinding disables Runtime PM, which cancels the suspend operation.
- [Medium] Missing locking in ALSA kcontrol `put` callbacks leads to race conditions and corrupted port mapping state.

Author: Jorijn van der Graaf <jorijnvdgraaf@catcrafts.net>
ASoC: codecs: wcd9378: add TX/capture codec driver
This commit introduces the SoundWire driver for the Qualcomm WCD9378 audio
codec, supporting TX/capture paths. It handles the mobile presentation over
RX and TX slaves, incorporating SDCA function blocks.

[Severity: High]
Does this code need to validate the values read into pdev->m_port_map from
the device tree?
If a device tree provides a port mapping value that exceeds SDW_MAX_PORTS,
it appears this unvalidated value is later used in wcd9378_connect_port()
as an array index, which could result in an out-of-bounds heap write.

[Severity: Medium]
Are these read-modify-write operations safe from race conditions when
accessed concurrently?
The wcd9378_set_swr_port() function handles ALSA kcontrol put requests
and invokes wcd9378_connect_port() without acquiring any driver-specific
locks. Since the ALSA core allows concurrent kcontrol put callbacks, if
multiple threads toggle switches mapped to the same master port, could this
lead to lost updates and a corrupted port mapping state?

[Severity: Medium]
Will this asynchronous pm_runtime_put() complete before the device is
disabled?
In both the error path here in wcd9378_bind() and in wcd9378_unbind(), an
asynchronous pm_runtime_put() is called just prior to component_unbind_all().
When the component is unbound, pm_runtime_disable() is invoked, which
cancels pending asynchronous suspend work via __pm_runtime_barrier(). This
could cancel the requested suspend and leave the hardware incorrectly powered
up. Would pm_runtime_put_sync() be more appropriate here to guarantee the
suspend completes before removal?
