[PATCH v2 0/3] iio: adc: ti-ads112c14: continuous mode support

[David Lechner (TI)]

The TI ADS112C14 ADC has a continuous mode where it can trigger
conversions using its own clock and signals that data is ready using
the /DRDY line. This allows capturing data at higher rates since it
avoids the settling time between conversions. But it is limited to only
being able to sample one channel at a time.

Users will be able to select between continuous and single-shot mode
for buffered reads by selecting the trigger. If the "own" trigger from
the /DRDY interrupt is selected, continuous mode will be used. Or if
some other (software) trigger is selected, single-shot mode will be used
as was already implemented before this series.

Supporting open-drain /DRDY is deferred for future work. In simple cases
we have just done a `drive-open-drain` DT property for this, but on this
chip there is more than one pin (GPIO, FAULT interrupt) that could also
need to be open-drain and not all at the same time.

than polling (only when it is wired up).

Small note: the hard-coded 100 ms timeout will be replaced in a future
series with a dynamic value, so I didn't bother with a macro or comments
to explain why the value was chosen.

And passing indio_dev instead of data to irq is intentional as it will
be used in the next patch.

This should probably be defending against spurious interrupts by checking
the status register.  Ideally that would be in a threaded handler to avoid
a retry loop and race conditions around the completion.

i.e. we should know it is our interrupt for sure before complete()


The interrupt lets us skip polling (unless we do get a spurious) in favour
of just checking the status once after the interrupt gives us a strong
indication it should be set.

With the status register check I don't think we need to be doing this fine
grained host side control of the interrupt enable.  They tend to be
a bit unpredictable.  So if we had seen an interrupt when it was disabled
you might immediately see it fire upon enabling here before you call
the start.

As above (and you pointed out in that other thread) IRQF_NO_AUTOEN is probably
not appropriate here as we aren't supposed to see interrupts until we ask the device
to do something.

[PATCH v2 3/3] iio: adc: ti-ads112c14: add continuous mode support

Add support for continuous mode in the TI ADS112C14 ADC driver. In this
mode the ADC itself is starting each conversion, so we add a trigger
based on the DRDY interrupt to read each sample. This mode is also
limited in that only one channel can be enabled at a time since the
chip does not have a sequencer or simultaneous sampling capability.
Continuous mode will only be used when this new trigger is the current
trigger.

Even for this path we should be checking it wasn't a spurious interrupt.
If that's happening in a threaded interrupt we'll then call iio_trigger_poll_nested()
and the handler will happen in the interrupt thread.   So the overhead
of that check should just be the check.

For this single shot read we are probably less bothered by overhead so
moving this to a thread should be fine I think.

So do we need to do this to avoid some condition, or is this the defensive
stuff you pointed out in that other thread?

I'd normally expect a dataready trigger to be controlling if the interrupt
is generated at all rather than masking host end.

For now, I think we'll not bother with checking for spurious interrupts.
The only reason it should happen is electrical noise (or disconnecting
wires on a live system). And we can add it in a follow up patch if we
decide we need it. The overhead of an extra read for each sample might be
a bit much at the higher sample rates. So we'll want to implement the
higher sample rates first anyway.

We can read the status along with the data in a single transfer, so that
might be a more efficient way to do it too.
