The recipe for Boost does not support building Boost.Python NumPy.
There is a mistake in the variables supplied to test for numpy. A new
PACKAGECONFIG option is also provided to allow it to be optionally
enabled.
Below are the commit messages with additional debug information:
boost: Use python3-native executable
The Boost build system executes Python in the compile task to
import the Numpy module and print the include directory.
We must specify the python3-native executable in the user-config.jam
so that the python.jam can execute it properly.
Without this change, it specifies a non-existent python executable
and reports "No such file or directory" in log.do_compile.
```
boost: Add support for Boost.Python NumPy extension
Support for NumPy was added to Boost release 1.63.
This additional numpy PACKAGECONFIG ensures that python3-numpy
is added as build-time and run-time dependencies.
With this support in place we may add a PACKAGECONFIG to enable numpy.
Shown here in conf/local.conf:
```
PACKAGECONFIG:append:pn-boost = " numpy"

The Python one-liner which imports numpy uses the python3-numpy-native module,
however the return value doesn't appear to be used. The supplied include path
pointing to the target sysroot seems to be used for compliation.

The original line is already 236 characters wide, so a larger change would be necessary to get it under 200.
Is there a preferred way to deal with this?
Using line continuation seems visually unappealing:
echo "using python : ${PYTHON_BASEVERSION} "\
": ${STAGING_DIR_NATIVE}${bindir}/python3-native/python3 "\
": ${STAGING_DIR_HOST}${includedir}/${PYTHON_DIR}${PYTHON_ABI} "\
": ${STAGING_DIR_HOST}${libdir}/${PYTHON_DIR} ;" >> ${WORKDIR}/user-config.jam
Another solution would be to set variables (either bitbake or bash) and then reference them:
PARAM1="${PYTHON_BASEVERSION}"
PARAM1="${STAGING_DIR_NATIVE}${bindir}/python3-native/python3"
PARAM1="${STAGING_DIR_HOST}${includedir}/${PYTHON_DIR}${PYTHON_ABI}"
PARAM4="${STAGING_DIR_HOST}${libdir}/${PYTHON_DIR}"
echo "using python : $PARAM1 :$PARAM2 :$PARAM3 :$PARAM4 ;" >> ${WORKDIR}/user-config.jam
Are there any other options to consider?
Regards,
Rob

Don't worry about this one. It is more a warning than a must fix IMO...

I'm slightly concerned that this needs the native variant at build
time. What for? If boost queries native numpy using native python for
options and settings, then those aren't necessarily correct in a
cross-compile scenario.

This needs a bit more careful look. How is the include directory used?
Is it correct to ask for the native include directory in a cross
compile build, combined with putting python3-numpy-native into the
native sysroot? Do we need to inherit python3targetconfig instread to
obtain target values? Does the build system simply import numpy to
check it's present (still not a correct thing in cross compile), or
does it then ask 'things' from it?
Alex
