The current ETMx configuration via sysfs can lead to the following
inconsistencies:
- If a configuration is modified via sysfs while a perf session is
active, the running configuration may differ between before
a sched-out and after a subsequent sched-in.
- If a perf session and sysfs session tries to enable concurrently,
configuration from configfs could be corrupted (etm4).
- There is chance to corrupt drvdata->config if perf session tries
to enabled among handling cscfg_csdev_disable_active_config()
in etm4_disable_sysfs() (etm4).
To resolve these inconsistencies, the configuration should be separated into:
- active_config, which is applied configuration for the current session
- config, which stores the settings configured via sysfs.
and apply configuration from configfs after taking a mode.
Also, This patch set includes some small fixes:
- missing trace id release in etm4x.
- underflow issue for nrseqstate.
- wrong check in etm4x_sspcicrn_present().
- missing call of cscfg_csdev_disable_active_config()

According to Embedded Trace Macrocell Architecture Specification
ETMv4.0 to ETM4.6 [0], TRCSSPCICR<n> is present only if all of
the following are true:
- TRCIDR4.NUMSSCC > n.
- TRCIDR4.NUMPC > 0b0000.
- TRCSSCSR<n>.PC == 0b1.
Comment for etm4x_sspcicrn_present() is align with the specification.
However, the check should use drvdata->nr_pe_cmp to check TRCIDR4.NUMPC
not nr_pe.

According to IHI006H Embedded Trace Macrocell Architecture
Specification[0], TRCSEQEVR<n> is implemented only when
TRCIDR5.NUMSEQSTATE is 0b100, in which case n ranges from 0 to 2;
otherwise, TRCIDR5.NUMSEQSTATE is 0b000.
IOW, the number of usage in the initialisation or setting
TRCSEQEVR<n> with drvdata->nrseqstate - 1 in the loop could make
underflow issue when TRCIDR5.NUMSEQSTATE is 0b000.
Therefore, introduce nr_seq_ctrls field and untie it from nrseqstate.
As part of this introduce ETM_MAX_SEQ_TRANSITIONS macro and
apply nr_seq_ctrls and above macro to TRCSEQEVR<n> relevant fields setup.

If etm4_enable_sysfs() fails in cscfg_csdev_enable_active_config(),
the trace ID may be leaked because it is not released.
To address this, call etm4_release_trace_id() when etm4_enable_sysfs()
fails in cscfg_csdev_enable_active_config().

The current ETM4x configuration via sysfs can lead to

after a subsequent sched-in.
- If a perf session and a sysfs session enable tracing concurrently,
the configuration from configfs may become corrupted.
- There is a risk of corrupting drvdata->config if a perf session enables
tracing while cscfg_csdev_disable_active_config() is being handled in
etm4_disable_sysfs().
To resolve these issues, separate the configuration into:
- active_config: the configuration applied to the current session
- config: the configuration set via sysfs
Additionally:
- Apply the configuration from configfs after taking the appropriate mode.
- Since active_config and related fields are accessed only by the local CPU
in etm4_enable/disable_sysfs_smp_call() (similar to perf enable/disable),
remove the lock/unlock from the sysfs enable/disable path and
startup/dying_cpu except when to access config fields.
As the active_config is used for cfg-configfs, etmv4 doesn't need to set
its lock for the cfg-configfs since the active_config is proceted by cs_mode
otherwise it would make a possible cpu-stall when it get interrupt while
setting the sysfs configuration.
Therefore, set the drv_spinlock for cfg-configfs as NULL and
let the cfg-configfs disable irq without grap drv_spinlock when it is NULL.

In the perf enable path, there are missing cases where
cscfg_csdev_disable_active_config() is not called:
- Branch broadcast is selected but not supported by the hardware
- etm4_enable_hw() fails
This can lead to a leak of config_desc->active_cnt.
Fix this by properly calling cscfg_csdev_disable_active_config()
in these error paths.

The current ETM3x configuration via sysfs can lead to the following
inconsistencies:
- If a configuration is modified via sysfs while a perf session is
active, the running configuration may differ between before
a sched-out and after a subsequent sched-in.
To resolve these issues, separate the configuration into:
- active_config: the configuration applied to the current session
- config: the configuration set via sysfs
Additionally:
- Since active_config and related fields are accessed only by the local CPU
in etm_enable/disable_sysfs_smp_call() (similar to perf enable/disable),
remove the lock/unlock from the sysfs enable/disable path and
starting/dying_cpu path except when to access config fields only.

etm_starting_cpu()/etm_dying_cpu() are called in not sleepable context.
This poses an issue in PREEMPT_RT kernel where spinlock_t is sleepable.
To address this, change etm3's drvdata->spinlock type to raw_spin_lock_t.
This will be good to align with etm4x.

cpu online() check is done in coresight_validate_source_sysfs() already.
and smp_call_function_single() will fail when cpu is offline.
Therefore, remove redundant check in etm_enable_sysfs().

The purpose of TRCSSCSRn register is to show status of
the corresponding Single-shot Comparator Control and input supports.
That means writable field's purpose for reset or restore from idle status
not for configuration.
Therefore, exclude ss_status from drvdata->config and move it to drvdata.

s_ex_level is a hardware capability rather than a configurable parameter.
As such, it should not be stored in the configuration structure.
Remove s_ex_level from the config structure and pass etm4_caps to the
functions that need to access this capability.

Introduce struct etm_caps to describe ETMv3 capabilities
and move capabilities information into it.
Since drvdata->etmccr and drvdata->etmccer are used to check
whether it supports fifofull logic and timestamping,
remove etmccr and etmccer field from drvdata and add relevant fields
in etm_caps structure.

I understand that this patch tries to put all the changes (active_config
and drv_spinlock) into a single patch so that it can be backported to
stable kernels.

difficult for maintainers to backport it to stable kernels. The fixes
tag 54ff892b76c6 is quite old, while this patch also touches cfgfs
which was introduced much later.
Can we treat this as a refactoring instead and split it into at least
two patches? This would make it easier to review now and easier to
understand later if someone will read the changes.

It couldn't since separation of Lock and SMP can introduce the bug for
that patch. and the Lock and SMP call refactoring isn't meaningful
without active_config.

I think this is much annyoing. since the deference might add more
instruction to save the flags. Otherwise the typecheck is for
compilet-time check and not for runtime.

I vaguely remember that we discussed the issue with always clearing
drvdata::ss_status in hw_enable(), which might result in single-shot
does not work properly in a perf session.
This issue is not introduced by this patch, and I think we agreed to
address it later. Could you document it in the commit log so that we
can understand and track the issue later.

Each time I read through this patch, I find it a bit difficult to follow
the overall logic, as it combines several changes together.
I have no strong opinion for this though. Perhaps we could split out the
support for a NULL feat_csdev->drv_spinlock into a separate change
first, as that seems independent and should not introduce regression.

An inline function provides stronger type checking at the API boundary.
It is readable and easier to maintain. Dereferencing *flags would be
fine, as this is not a hot path.
I was inspired by the implementation in include/linux/serial_core.h
(see uart_port_lock_irqsave() and uart_port_unlock_irqrestore()).

It's feasible, however, I feel it doesn’t seem semantically appropriate.
Since, the etmv4_config is a configuration and TBH, it could be not
embedded in to etmv4_drvdata.
Though the usages where the chnaged fucntion, the config're all embeded.
However, If we introduce the etm4_get_drvdata_from_config(),
We need to check the drvdata pointer is valid since it passes the config
not embeded and this would be more strange.
So, I think it seems better to the caps arguments.

If the NULL lock is separated, since it before the SMP refactoring
there will be a *race* for it.
OTOH, if SMP first, absent of NULL lock would make a deadelock.
So If we really want to seperate, we should the SMP and Lock
refactorying must be one group.
However, seperating the active_config from there, I'm not sure whether
This would really make a difficulty of backport.
We might separate the active_config as a cleanup but, this would require
also for backporting but active_config one wouldn't have a fix tag.
So, I think it would be better to keep as-is.

I think there’s always been quite a bit of debate around this,
particularly regarding the maintainability of inline functions versus
function-like macros. Personally, I don’t find this particular function
any harder to read or maintain as a macro.
On the contrary, even though this isn’t a hot path, adding an extra
instruction still feels like a less preferable trade-off to me.
@Suzuki, What do you think? inline or macro for feat_csdev_lock_irqsave()?
