Ceph and Google Summer of Code

Hey all,

The application period for GSoC is once again upon us (it actually
launched while I was out on vacation last week).  I wanted to extend
this call to anyone who might be interested in mentoring a student
over the summer months in a project for Ceph development.

For those of you who are not familiar with the GSoC program, you can
check out the newly redesigned site:
https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/.  The gist of it is Google offers
a stipend to both the student and the mentoring org to produce Open
Source code and for the students to learn about, and get used to
working with, the Open Source community. Ceph has been a mentoring org
for the last couple of years, and always donate our mentor org stipend
to the Software Freedom Conservancy.

While previous years have seen primarily core developers (Inktank/Red
Hat) as mentors, this year I would like to open it up to any Ceph
developer that would like to propose a project and mentor the student.
If you are interested in submitting a project to mentor, you can do so
via email to me **before 5p EST this Thursday 18 Feb**.

If you have any questions, please let me know and hopefully we’ll have
another great year with Ceph and Google Summer of Code. Thanks!

Hey Tahaa,

This email was a call for mentors to submit projects, but keep your
eyes out for when the Google Summer of Code projects are announced (29
Feb). In the meantime if you’d like to take a look at some of our
project ideas (or come up with one of your own!) I’d be happy to chat
with you about it.

If Ceph is accepted we can work on an application. Otherwise, we’re
always happy to help new contributors come up to speed. Thanks for

As many of you may have seen by now, Ceph was accepted back for
another year of GSoC. I’m asking all of you to make sure that any
applicable students that you know consider working with Ceph this
year.

We’re happy to accept proposals from our ideas list [0], or any custom
proposal that you and they might dream up. This also applies to
mentors. While we have a great group of initial mentors, if you are
interested in mentoring and have a student work with you to create a
proposal, I can add you as a mentor all the way through the end of the
application period.

A long wanted feature is mail storage in RADOS:

Would that be a good idea? I'd be more than happy to mentor this one.

I will probably lack the technical C++ skills, but e-mail storage itself is
something I'm very familiar with.

That’s a great idea, I’ll add it to the ideas list (and you as a
mentor). You, or anyone, should feel free to solicit a student to
submit the proposal if you know any. I think this would be a great
