Configurazione RAID SOFTWARE su vecchio PC: CONSIGLI

Ciao a tutti, mi sono appena iscritto su questo forum per chiedervi un
consiglio riguardo la configurazione di un  Pentium PRO 166 MHz con 64 Mb di
RAM un controller SCSI Adaptech AHA-2940U con collegati 2 HD Viking SCSI da
4,5 Gb l'uno ed un CD-ROM SCSI. HD Maxtor 80 Gb su IDE ATA-133, lettore
floppy

Il controller SCSI non permette di creare un RAID hardware e quindi devo
optare per uno software.
Ho una RED HAT 7.0 che permette di costruire un array software e quindi di
fare un RAID 0/1/5 in fase di installazione. 

Anzi tutto vorrei sapere come è più opportuno collegare i 2 HD SCSI: uno lo
collego alla piattina interna del controller e l'altro HD sulla piattina
esterna, anzichè entrambi sulla stessa piattina come li ho sempre avuti,
giusto? 
Poi, qunado costruisco il file system come mi conviene suddividere gli hard
disk? mi conviene creare la /home su quello IDE da 80 Gb? il boot loader
credo debba installarlo su l'HD da 80 Gb perchè il bios se  rileva l'HD sul
IDE cerca automaticamnete il bootloader su di quello e se non lo trova non
parte.....

Avete consigli utili? Anzichè una vecchia REDHAT è meglio che utilizzi un
altro sistema operativo?

I stronly suggest using English, that way you could get more replies.

Now, from what I understood (mostly through google translate).

I recall that AHA-2940U has just 1 SCSI channel. So it doesn't matter
if both disks are inside, or one is in, and the other is out. That
means you can totally stay with your current, all internal, setup.

As for the 2nd question, I don't quite understand it (my Italian is
totally rusty), but if you want to use the IDE harddisk as boot drive,
and just store some data on that 2*SCSI software raid, I recommend
putting bootloader on the IDE drive.

However, be warned, that RH 7.0 does not use the md driver which is
this list about. It's using the old "raidtools" package (or at least I
suppose so, since my RH 7.2 has
raidtools-0.90 installed).

Sorry, I can try to translate in english, bad english....anyway: I'd like to
make a raid 0 on an old mainboard FX440i (I think) with a Pentium PRO-s 150
MHz running at 166 MHz with 64Mb Simm-RAM. I have a SCSI controller Adaptech
AHA-2940U with 2 SCSI Viking 4,5Gb linked to the same cable and a SCSI
CD-ROM. Plus I have for this old but still great pc an HD Maxtor 80Gb and a
floppy drive. ISA audio card and a ethernet card.

Well I'd like to make a software raid with a REDHAT but I'd like to know
which is the better configuration and partition.....is it better a RAID 0 or
RAID 5 software config? maybe is it better a normal ext3 file system?

It sounds like you're trying to use a really old redhat version
instead of either the commercial fedora or it's free release centos.
I'm not very familliar with Redhat's newer releases, but if it's a
hardware issue versions of Debian probably still support your
hardware.

bel pezzo da museo, immagino tu abbia gia' valutato l'opzione di
rottamare il tutto....

lasciali sulla piattina interna, in ogni caso e' sempre lo stesso canale
e cosi' ti risparmi un terminatore e un cavo.

dipende da quanto spazio hai bisogno per la home, in linea di massima
si.

a meno di non disabilitare il riconoscimento degli hard disk dal bios,
linux comunque lo trova lo stesso.

come qualcuno ha gia' detto forse debian supporta ancora quell'hardware
e almeno ci sono ancora gli update. Il problema e' che e' molto diversa
dalla redhat che probabilmente conosci.

In ogni caso io averi qualche remora a creare un raid-0 su dei dischi
cosi' vecchi, se uno dei due si dovesse guastare perdi tutto.

No, you should only use the internal scsi port, it is the same channel
anyway and you save a cable and a terminator.

It depends on your space requirements, probably yes.

You can always disable the drive from the bios. linux does not care.

As someone already said you can try with a debian, it should support
your old hw and still provide updates. The issue might be that it is
quite different from the redhat system you are probably accustomed to.

In any case i would be wary of creating a raid0 on a couple of very old
disks, if a single one fails you loose all data.
