Summary: aoss + skype: volume_adjust: SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_IGAIN
failed: Invalid argument
Description:
I've tried 'skype' with my M-Audio Revolution 7.1.

Soon (probably in a second) after this command line:

aoss skype &

the terminal window gets filled with

volume_adjust: SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_IGAIN failed: Invalid argument

messages, and I do not hear anything in 'skype' connecting to their
automated 'echo123' service.

The message is not quite clear, and I believe it shouldn't flood the
screen.

I mean, the code should first check capabilities of the card and its
configuration and
issue the message once.

What is IGAIN in the message above ? Input gain ? That is, capture gain ?

With revo 7.1, this might not work, too, since revo has really no "Capture
Volume" (corresponding to IGAIN in OSS).

If so, it must be a bug of Skype. Skype must check DEVMASK before reading
IGAIN.

Takashi,

thanks for you reply.

I do not think it's that much of a bug in Skype.

I think it's hard to find a soundcard which doesn't have input gain
control
under Windows.

And I believe that the card should have, and it's possible to do, input
gain control - please see

https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1187
.

Aslo, I'm repeating what I've said in the issue above:

"
*** I still have no capture with my Revolution 7.1 (issue 0001096) ***
.

Since I'm not getting it work, I've been trying to use ALSA utilities
('amixer',
'alsamixer', 'aoss') - "trial and error" approach - to make it work, and
have
found other problems on the way.

Resolution of these other problem, including introduction of gain
control,
will not solve my main problem - lack of capture.

I would appreciate getting an answer to the question in

https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php [^]?id=1096 :

"
Maybe my previous question does not contain enough details.

Here is the rephrased question:

Running 'amixer' with this command line

amixer cget numid=<number>

, where <number is in 5..12 range, I see output like this:

"
  ; type=ENUMERATED,access=rw---,values=1,items=5
  ; Item 0 'PCM Out'
  ; Item 0000001 'H/W In 0'
  ; Item 0000002 'H/W In 1'
  ; Item 0000003 'IEC958 In L'
  ; Item 0000004 'IEC958 In R'
  : values=0
".

Can any of these controls be related to enabling capture ?

Thanks,
  Sergei.
".

Or, to be more precise, getting an answer to the question in general:
"How
to enable capture in M-Audio Revolution 7.1 ?".
".

Thanks,
  Sergei.

This card (codec chip) has really no input level support _on hardware_.

Can't you choose the capture source via alsamixer instead of amixer?

This card (codec chip) has really no input level support _on hardware_.

Can't you choose the capture source via alsamixer instead of amixer?

Takashi,

regarding this:
"
This card (codec chip) has really no input level support _on hardware_.
"
- I understand this, and that's why I suggested to implement it in
_software_
- please read description in

https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1187
.

Regarding:
"
Can't you choose the capture source via alsamixer instead of amixer?
"
No, I can't with ALSA version 1.0,8. The attempt to at all show capture
part of 'alsamixer' causes it to segfault, and it was reported in

https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1095

- claimed to be resolved.

If I understand correctly, everything that can be done in 'alsamixer' can
also
be done in 'amixer'. I think that actually even more can be done in
'amixer'
than in 'alsamixer' because 'amixer' deals with raw controls directly.

So, could you please tell me how to enable capture using 'amixer' ?

Thanks,
  Sergei.

No, such a software conversion shouldn't be in the kernel code. It's a job
of user-space. That is, such a feature could be implemented easily on
alsa-lib, but this can't be used through kernel OSS emulation.

The fix of alsamixer should be already fixed in 1.0.9b. Please update
your system.

I know there is a bug in amixer (the bug report isn't closed), but
currently this is still in the deep of my long TODO list. If anyone can
take a look and debug it, it'd be appreciated.

BTW, you can do the following instead of amixer, if you don't like the
interactive program:
- alsactl -f somefile store
- edit somefile manuall
- alsactl -f somefile restore

Summary: aoss + skype: volume_adjust: SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_IGAIN
failed: Invalid argument
Description:
I've tried 'skype' with my M-Audio Revolution 7.1.

Soon (probably in a second) after this command line:

aoss skype &

the terminal window gets filled with

volume_adjust: SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_IGAIN failed: Invalid argument

messages, and I do not hear anything in 'skype' connecting to their
automated 'echo123' service.

The message is not quite clear, and I believe it shouldn't flood the
screen.

I mean, the code should first check capabilities of the card and its
configuration and
issue the message once.

What is IGAIN in the message above ? Input gain ? That is, capture gain ?

Takashi, what about an answer to this question of mine:

Could you please tell me which lines to change and how in the
'asound.state.generated_by_alsaconf' in order to enable capture ?
"

?

Thanks,

I don't understand what you mean "enable capture" in general. One of your
bugreports told that you could capture (even on OSS) with a certain
application.

Again, revo has no capture control. At least, the hardware spec I got
tells so.

The thing that Skype aborts when no IGAIN exists is the bug of Skype. It
has to be fixed by the application itself. Please report this to Skype at
first.

As a workaround of this problem, you can add a softvol plugin to
create a virtual volume attenuator. For example,

pcm.revocap {
  type softvol
  slave.pcm {
    type hw
    card 0
  }
  control {
    name "Capture Volume"
    card 0
  }
}

Then, define "dsp0" PCM:

pcm.dsp0 {
  type asym
  playback.pcm "plughw:0"
  capture.pcm {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "revocap"
  }
}

so that aoss uses the newly defined capture PCM.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
With revo 7.1, this might not work, too, since revo has really no "Capture
Volume" (corresponding to IGAIN in OSS).

If so, it must be a bug of Skype. Skype must check DEVMASK before reading
IGAIN.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 sst4 - 06-12-05 19:35
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Takashi,

thanks for you reply.

I do not think it's that much of a bug in Skype.

I think it's hard to find a soundcard which doesn't have input gain
control
under Windows.

And I believe that the card should have, and it's possible to do, input
gain control - please see

https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1187
.

Aslo, I'm repeating what I've said in the issue above:

"
*** I still have no capture with my Revolution 7.1 (issue 0001096) ***
.

Since I'm not getting it work, I've been trying to use ALSA utilities
('amixer',
'alsamixer', 'aoss') - "trial and error" approach - to make it work, and
have
found other problems on the way.

Resolution of these other problem, including introduction of gain
control,
will not solve my main problem - lack of capture.

I would appreciate getting an answer to the question in

https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php [^]?id=1096 :

"
Maybe my previous question does not contain enough details.

Here is the rephrased question:

Running 'amixer' with this command line

amixer cget numid=<number>

, where <number is in 5..12 range, I see output like this:

"
  ; type=ENUMERATED,access=rw---,values=1,items=5
  ; Item 0 'PCM Out'
  ; Item 0000001 'H/W In 0'
  ; Item 0000002 'H/W In 1'
  ; Item 0000003 'IEC958 In L'
  ; Item 0000004 'IEC958 In R'
  : values=0
".

Can any of these controls be related to enabling capture ?

Thanks,
  Sergei.
".

Or, to be more precise, getting an answer to the question in general:
"How
to enable capture in M-Audio Revolution 7.1 ?".
".

Thanks,
  Sergei.

This card (codec chip) has really no input level support _on hardware_.

Can't you choose the capture source via alsamixer instead of amixer?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 sst4 - 06-13-05 14:12
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Takashi,

regarding this:

Thanks,
  Sergei.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 tiwai - 06-13-05 14:30
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No, such a software conversion shouldn't be in the kernel code. It's a job
of user-space.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 sst4 - 06-13-05 16:05

Takashi,

regatrding

"
you can do the following instead of amixer, if you don't like the
interactive program:
- alsactl -f somefile store
- edit somefile manuall
- alsactl -f somefile restore
"
- please find attached 'asound.state.generated_by_alsaconf' file
generated
by 'alsaconf'. Before generation I cleaned up /etc/modprobe.conf by
removing
all sound related entries from it.

Could you please tell me which lines to change and how in the
'asound.state.generated_by_alsaconf' in order to enable capture ?

Please note that the word "capture" does not appear in the file.

Regarding 'amixer'. The bug that I filed affects only control number 0 -
maybe
'amixer' is still good enough to enable capture ?

Anyway, please let me know how to enable capture either through changes
in
the 'asound.state.generated_by_alsaconf' file or using 'amixer'.

Thanks,
  Sergei.

Takashi, please unmark the issue as duplicate of duplicate of 0001096.

The latter was regarding capture (loopback) functionality as a whole, and
this
one is regarding certain error message in OSS emulation mode.

Issues can be marked as duplicate if resolving one of them automatically
resolves
the other and vice versa. It is not the case.

Thanks,

Summary: aoss + skype: volume_adjust: SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_IGAIN
failed: Invalid argument
Description:
I've tried 'skype' with my M-Audio Revolution 7.1.

Soon (probably in a second) after this command line:

aoss skype &

the terminal window gets filled with

volume_adjust: SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_IGAIN failed: Invalid argument

messages, and I do not hear anything in 'skype' connecting to their
automated 'echo123' service.

The message is not quite clear, and I believe it shouldn't flood the
screen.

I mean, the code should first check capabilities of the card and its
configuration and
issue the message once.

What is IGAIN in the message above ? Input gain ? That is, capture gain ?

Takashi, please unmark the issue as duplicate of duplicate of 0001096.

The latter was regarding capture (loopback) functionality as a whole, and
this
one is regarding certain error message in OSS emulation mode.

Issues can be marked as duplicate if resolving one of them automatically
resolves
the other and vice versa. It is not the case.

Thanks,
  Sergei.

Takashi, first the good news - I managed to hear my own recording using
'echo123' automated voice testing service of Skype - which means that
capture
as such + OSS emulation basically work.

The volume of my recorded voice was sufficient and the sound quality was
quite
good of both their prerecorded message and my played back voice.

Now the bad news.

I created my ~/.asoundrc file according to my understanding of your
message
- my understanding may well be wrong.

cat ~/.asoundrc
pcm.revocap {
  type softvol
  slave.pcm {
    type hw
    card 0
  }
  control {
    name "Capture Volume"
    card 0
  }
}

pcm.dsp0 {
  type asym
  playback.pcm "plughw:0"
  capture.pcm {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "revocap"
  }
}

If I'm using this file, I hear only hiss when my recorded voice is played
back.

The file does not eliminate the

"volume_adjust: SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_IGAIN failed: Invalid argument"

message.

I have aslo created /dev/dsp0 which is a symlink to /dev/dsp:

lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 8 Jun 28 01:22 /dev/dsp0 -> /dev/dsp

- I am not sure whether this is necessary or not. Anyway, Skype does not
allow me to choose anything but /dev/dsp.

If I hide the ~/.asoundrc file, then I can use Skype as I described
above.

Another thing is capture loopback, i.e. ability to hear my own voice
while
I'm talking. Well, it's either or - I mean, if I enable loopback using
"H/W", "H/W 1" controls in 'alsamixer', I cannot hear Skype.

The funny workaround is this: I enable capture loopback only for one
channel,
say, "H/W". In such a case I hear myself while talking in the left
earphone,
and I hear Skype in the right earphone - "H/W 1" is set "PCM Out" for
this.

Is there a way to work with Skype normally ?

Thanks,
  Sergei.

Unfortunately, the ICE1724 doesn't allow the mixing of multiple sources for
the playback. That is, *either* PCM, analog-in or spdif-in can be used
*exclusively*. If you choose the analog-loopback, you can't hear PCM.

The only possible way to solve this is to do mixing on software. But, of
course, you will get a certain latency in comparison with the hardware
mixing. The best solution would be to use JACK, but again, OSS-emulation
makes the problem...

I don't see how you started skype in your recent reports. If you start
skype with "aoss", ~/.asoundrc has influence, and /dev/dsp* doesn't matter
at all because the emulation doesn't open /dev/dsp* at all.
OTOH, if you don't use "aoss", it's most likely through the kernel OSS
emulation. In this case, ~/.asoundrc has no influence.at all.

Anyway, it looks like aoss still has a problem with IGAIN. I'll check on
it. (But if Skype works only with a warning message, you can forget it
for a while...)

Takashi, all the time I was using Skype as

aoss Skype
.

And I can't just forget the warning message - printing it consumes too
much
CPU time, and the sound becomes distorted.

In order to be able to use Skype for real purposes I suppressed the
message
this way (starting Skype from 'tcsh'):

aoss skype >& /dev/null
.

The problem is that in such a manner I suppress all error messages - it's
too
reckless IMHO.

The best way to resolve the issue would be to implement SW gain control
( https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1187 ); as a
temporary
measure it would be nice to suppress the particular message this issue is
about.

The latter is possible if the message is produced by ALSA. The
suppression
should be selective, of course, i.e. through command line switch, config
file,
environment variable or something like that.

...

Can there be an ALSA application that even is OSS emulation performs SW
mixing ?

I.e. an application that can take the desired capture stream (if they are
separate) and loop it to PCM out. Is it possible ?

I think such an issue has already been raised in
alsa-user@lists.sourceforge.net .

Thanks,
  Sergei.

Summary: aoss + skype: volume_adjust: SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_IGAIN
failed: Invalid argument
Description:
I've tried 'skype' with my M-Audio Revolution 7.1.

Soon (probably in a second) after this command line:

aoss skype &

the terminal window gets filled with

volume_adjust: SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_IGAIN failed: Invalid argument

messages, and I do not hear anything in 'skype' connecting to their
automated 'echo123' service.

The message is not quite clear, and I believe it shouldn't flood the
screen.

I mean, the code should first check capabilities of the card and its
configuration and
issue the message once.

What is IGAIN in the message above ? Input gain ? That is, capture gain ?

Thanks,
  Sergei.

An additional clarification: the
"
volume_adjust: SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_IGAIN failed: Invalid argument
"
message does not appear immediately after invokation of Skype, but rather
when a
session begins, i.e. when, for example, I call 'echo123' automated
service.

Hmm, did you apply the patch for aoss above?
After applying the patch, try once aoss skype with softvol plugin in
~/.asoundrc and quit immediately. This should create a user-defined
control "Capture Volume". Then again aoss skype without ~/.asoundrc.

Takashi, three minutes after publishing the patch (06-08-05 14:50 ->
06-08-05 14:53) you said:

"
With revo 7.1, this might not work, too, since revo has really no "Capture
Volume" (corresponding to IGAIN in OSS).

If so, it must be a bug of Skype. Skype must check DEVMASK before reading
IGAIN.
".

So, it was an indication for me that you were not insisting on the patch
anymore.

If you think the patch is worth trying, I'll have to allocate some time
for learning how to non-destructively compile ALSA.

Thanks,
  Sergei.

Summary: aoss + skype: volume_adjust: SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_IGAIN
failed: Invalid argument
Description:
I've tried 'skype' with my M-Audio Revolution 7.1.

Soon (probably in a second) after this command line:

aoss skype &

the terminal window gets filled with

volume_adjust: SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_IGAIN failed: Invalid argument

messages, and I do not hear anything in 'skype' connecting to their
automated 'echo123' service.

The message is not quite clear, and I believe it shouldn't flood the
screen.

I mean, the code should first check capabilities of the card and its
configuration and
issue the message once.

What is IGAIN in the message above ? Input gain ? That is, capture gain ?

Takashi, three minutes after publishing the patch (06-08-05 14:50 ->
06-08-05 14:53) you said:

"
With revo 7.1, this might not work, too, since revo has really no "Capture
Volume" (corresponding to IGAIN in OSS).

If so, it must be a bug of Skype. Skype must check DEVMASK before reading
IGAIN.
".

So, it was an indication for me that you were not insisting on the patch
anymore.

If you think the patch is worth trying, I'll have to allocate some time
for learning how to non-destructively compile ALSA.

Thanks,
  Sergei.

Am I still supposed to compile the patch and the whole ALSA or the patch
is already in the main code ?

Anyway, now even with non-redirected STODUT/STDERR and lot of

volume_adjust: SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_IGAIN failed: Invalid argument

messages the sound with Skype is smooth; I do not know whether it's due
to
changes in Skype, quality of connection or slightly different kernel
- now it's 2.6.11-6mdk-i686-up-4GB instead of 2.6.11-6mdk-i586-up-1GB.

I hope to make and upgrade to Mandriva 2006 next week, I think it has
ALSA
vesrion 1.0.9b.

I guess you're still supposed to use the patch. Try it first with

Summary: aoss + skype: volume_adjust: SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_IGAIN
failed: Invalid argument
Description:
I've tried 'skype' with my M-Audio Revolution 7.1.

Soon (probably in a second) after this command line:

aoss skype &

the terminal window gets filled with

volume_adjust: SOUND_MIXER_WRITE_IGAIN failed: Invalid argument

messages, and I do not hear anything in 'skype' connecting to their
automated 'echo123' service.

The message is not quite clear, and I believe it shouldn't flood the
screen.

I mean, the code should first check capabilities of the card and its
configuration and
issue the message once.

What is IGAIN in the message above ? Input gain ? That is, capture gain ?

Try it first with
--dry-run to see if it applies still.
