The problem with this theory is that I'm running 2.2.18, not 2.4.x.

Doh. I guess it isn't a 2.4x only problem then. ;) Very odd. Has anyone
seen this when the LVM patches are not applied?

I have....my system has some sort of leftover 4.2BSD partitioning ghost (I
removed all partitions before I installed linux) that remains from my days with
OpenBSD. As a result fdisk does not work, in fact it segfaults. And using
anything else, I have to reboot before I can make use of the partitions.
Wierdness.

I wasn't trying to be rude, btw. I had a friend tell me he had to bounce
his machine after a fdisk, but I have never had it happen myself. This was
with a generic 2.2.x kernel, btw.
If you need/want details, I can call him and ask.

If it helps. Fdisk to a disk that had no other
partitions on it. Create an extended, then a logical
inside it of 12G. Mark it as type 8e. Run pvcreate on
/dev/hdb5 (the logical) and had the doesn't exist
message. Reboot, create the physical, group and
logical then an ext2 fs on it and all is well.
Kernel 2.4.2
fdisk 2.10s
LVM 0.9.1_beta6
Hop over to a machine with:
Kernel 2.4.2
fdisk 2.10s
_NO LVM_
Same steps, except no change of type to 8e on the
logical partition. Create ext2 on it and mount away.
Maybe this helps...

Yup, rebooting the server fixed it. On the way home, it occured to me to
try that, but I've never had to boot a linux box after fdisking it. Go
figure.

Funny, I had the same issue at the same time. I
created /dev/hdb7 with fdisk and then a pvcreate just
after. pvcreate stated that the dev didn't exist.
Reboot fixed the problem. This could be a problem for
machines already up in production with small windows
for restarts. Why is this necessary and will it become
a "non-issue" in future releases? If this will be
necessary forever, then some simple planning would
solve the problem, at least on new installations. Any
way around this?
On another note, I have a customer running Oracle that
wishes to move to a LVM configuration. They are
extremely reliant on the machine being up and it's
very active. Is LVM at a point where I can safely
install it on a critical system? Loaded question, I
know, but I need some honest feedback.
I finally have it up and running on two machines and
to those that have developed it, it's really freakin'
cool.
An off topic question, but I think this is the best
place to start. How could one build "network logical
volumes"? Let's say I have 5 machines running LVM and
each one has a 10G /export volume. I want to take all
the export volumes off each machine and create one
large "network volume" of 50G. Then, from each client
I would like to mount that volume at /bignet or
something. Maybe if it could do a pseudo raid across
the 5 machines. If machine a went down, then data
could be gotten from another one since it's striped. I
know I could do read only redundancy with NFS, but i'd
like to be able to write. I think MS calls their
solution to this type of scenario DFS. Something like
this around for UNIX? Specifically Linux, but also
Solaris. Any pointers or suggestions would be great.

Can you try rebooting and trying the pvcreate again? I
suspect that it was
because the partition table was unable to be updated.

This appears to be an issue with fdisk and the 2.4.x series Linux kernels.
It has nothing to do with LVM as far as i can tell. I've had problems where
I run fdisk to change the size of a partition, but linux doesn't detect the
change. /proc/partitions is identical before and after i attempt to write
out the changes with fdisk. I'm not sure what has caused this. Maybe
someone else on the list knows?
I'll try to verify this when i get into work tomorrow.

Linux kernel NOT rereads partition table of a BUSY disk.
If you mount at least one filesystem from it, or used
a swap space on it, or opened /dev/[hs]d* device etc etc,
disk will be marked as busy. Well, linux kernel never
*rereads* disk partition, it reads them on a first disk
usage, when usage count increases from 0 to 1 (this is
shown on console when you first access a disk -- kernel
reports disk's geometry etc). And "forgots" about a disk
(but still showing it in /proc/partitions) when it's usage
becomes zero again. This is a long-standing issue that
will not be fixed in a near future. Probably IBM's LVMS
will have some infrastructure to address this, but I'm
not shure. To "fix" this, *significant* block layer
changes should be made, and all filesystems should be
prepared to handle partition table change at run time.
And there is nothing LVM or any other component can do
here.

You can look to various nbd (Network Block Device)
implementations, and build a softraid on top of them.
For NBDs, look to links at linux-ha.org site.

Hi all.
I'm new to LVM, but think I understad it, at least... <grin>
Anyway, I'm trying to setup the first VG but can't seem to build my PV's.
The transcript of what I did is at the bottom of this message.
As you can see, I was able to do pvcreate on /dev/sdc2, but not on
/dev/sdc3. These partitions are on a hardware raid5.
Am I missing something?
Thanx,
Mike Diehl,

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 30945.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs

Can you try rebooting and trying the pvcreate again? I suspect that it was
because the partition table was unable to be updated.
