Hi
We had a lot of SUN machines and just installed few linux machines.We
have all our licenses/Softwares of Solaris m/cs( NIS also on Solaris).But
when we access the things from linux client..network chokes..all things
hang..then we reboot the linux ..and set the rsize & wsize to 8K and now
things work fine..
Can any one puts lights why this all happen ..where is the problem.. in
linux or solairs.
Any site referneces for this customization..
thanks in advance
Ashutosh

Since Solaris defaults to 32K transfer sizes, and the client may be
taking its cues from the server, the 32K size might be too much for
the client NIC. If this is true, you should be able to correct
things simply by remounting with 8K rsize & wsize. If the reboot
is required, there may be more going on.
One thing; I've got Solaris 8 on Intel installed on my test machine
and did not run across any problems when I was running some tests
earlier this summer, using a 2.4.18 client.

please verify your configuration for me:
you are using NFS over UDP with 32K r/wsize?
your Linux clients run a 2.4 kernel, probably 2.4.18?

Hi
Yes ..we are using nfs over udp. . NFS server is Solaris 8 (with default
r/wsize=32Kb) and NFS Client is Red Hat Linux 7.3 ( kernel version
2.4.18-3)..
thanks for ur response

this looks like the famous "single NFS client DOS attack" bug.
when fragmenting IP packets, Linux can drop the remaining fragments
of an IP packet if it runs out of socket space during the fragmentation.
if this happens often enough, the server runs out of IP reassembly
queue space, and no one can talk to it.
enlarge your default socket buffer size with these instructions,
or use NFS over TCP instead, to prevent this from occurring.
1. Become root on your client
2. cd into /proc/sys/net/core
3. echo 262143 > rmem_max
4. echo 262143 > wmem_max
5. echo 262143 > rmem_default
6. echo 262143 > wmem_default
7. Remount your NFS file systems on the client
or add these lines to /etc/sysctl.conf and reboot your system:
net.core.rmem_max = 262143
net.core.wmem_max = 262143
net.core.rmem_default = 262143
net.core.wmem_default = 262143
