Just confirming that this worked for me. Had some problem with readline,
so I tried disabling it.
./configure --enable-Werror=no --without-readline --disable-readline
This worked for me on RH 8.0 (gcc 3.2-10)
I have reiser4 on an ide partition. What sorts of tests would be useful?

Try the following:
do a search for -lreadline in ./configure, add -lncurses
to any line in ./configure which is a) setting an
environment variable and b) does not yet contain -
lncurses but _does_ contain -lreadline
then do ./configure --enable-Werror=no; make
works for me
