ALSA Soundcard Matrix

Hi,
what's the policy for adding new soundcards to the ALSA Soundcard Matrix?
I recently bought a "Terratec Aureon 5.1 Fun" soundcard and it works fine
with ALSA. So if you guys add soundcards based on user's emails, here's
one ;-)

Here's the relevant data:
Vendor:  Terratec
Product: Aureon 5.1 Fun
Chipset: CMI8738
Notes:   [Tio]
I have only tested the line out, headphone and toslink (optical) out so
far, though.

ALSA Soundcard Matrix.

Hi, 

The Aureal SoundCards have a working ALSA driver, and therefor the
SoundCard matrix should at least show them green. More correct would be
"supported". A preliminar driver (lacking some advanced features) will
be offered soon to merge the ALSA tree. 
Some people testing the driver would be great. As many probably already
know, it can be found on:

ALSA Soundcard Matrix

Hey everyone,
i've been interested in the ALSA project for a long time and just recently got around to writing a driver for it. I'm not particularly experienced in this field of development but i was thinking of ways i could contribute to the project.
I intended to try and find unsupported hardware that no-one really cared that much about but it would be 'nice' to have fuller soundcard support. It was my intention to support these devices just so i could learn and get myself into a position where i could contribute better to the project.
I found that i couldn't really get accurate information on which devices where supported. The matrix seems to contain quite a few incorrect entries and there are a lot of devices missing completely.

I had the idea of opening up the matrix to the ALSA users. An interactive system where users fill out a simple form about support for their device. Stirring up involvement in the soundcard matrix could, i think, lead to a much more accurate representation of ALSA's current support. Users would be able to gauge how useful ALSA will be to them and developers would be aware of unsupported hardware.

Users don't care about chipsets and they shouldn't have to. To hear that X chipset is supported doesn't always mean a lot to them but to hear that Y soundcard has support is much more meaningful. Some chipsets are widespread and listed on the matrix but if a user doesn't see their card there, as far as they're concerned, they can't determined if it's supported or not, and neither can we really.

ALSA developement is fast and everyone's doing a great job, i mean that. There's no time for developers to update the matrix and they can't always tell exactly which models are supported due to chipsets appearing in loads of devices. Likewise, users don't really care  or even know how to patch the matrix. 

The system would group all the reports to individual devices and so popularity of hardware could be gauged to some degree giving an indication of which jobs will target more users.

Anyway, what are your thoughts? I know no-one has time to do this but if it's something that makes sense then i can do it.

Hi Ash,

The system I set up a couple of years back for the matrix and docs originally
allowed users to post comments/updates but the server stopped allowing php to
send email so I haven't recieved any posts for quite some time.

At the moment I don't have direct access to the net but that will change next
month so I will try to spend some time on upgrading the system if it is deemed
a good idea.

That's a call for Jaroslav to make though as the servers are hosted by his
employer so there might be a reason the mail stopped being sent other than a
bug.
