file attributes destroyed.

Hi,

last night, some files and directories involved in starting bash went defect:

$HOME had very wrong permissions
/etc/bashrc was empty

and a few more. I did not make notes, I was rather trying to fix that ASAP.

This never happened before. I am running an up to date debian unstable 
with only ReiserFS and 2.4.22

Last night, the summer daylight saving ended. The modification time of
/etc/bashrc was 03:29, I believe.

Any ideas?

would you take the latest reiserfsprogs from our ftp site (3.6.11) and run
reiserfsck to be sure that there are no fs corruptions.

Are you using the SuSE kernel?  Are you using NFS?

No, Debian unstable with a standard 2.4.22 kernel augmented with ibcs2, qc-usb.
I am using ibcs2 since years and qc-usb since several months.

Ah, wait, I forgot, did you ever use a kernel version older than 2.4.22 
on this fs?  Could the corruption be from that time?

I am not sure how old this file system is but it has certainly seen 2.4.20
and 2.4.21.

However the files were still intact when I made my nightly backup last night.
I'll try reiserfsck later.

I now did. Actually I downloaded the latest Knoppix which contains reiserfsck 3.6.11.
Result: Nothing found.

I guess I'll just wait and see if it happens again.
