Conversion from v3.6 to v4 of Reiserfs...

Sorry for the question from a newbie but I can'f find the answer and I find in
google maillist and may sites...

I recently upgrade from 2.4.20 kernel to 2.6.3 kernel my debian testing.

I see in logs that my lvm system are using version 3.6 of resiser fs.

Feb 23 21:57:12 servidor1 kernel: found reiserfs format "3.6" with standard
journal
Feb 23 21:57:12 servidor1 kernel: Reiserfs journal params: device dm-0, size
8192, journal first block 18, max trans len 1024, max batch 900, max commit
age 30, max trans age 30
Feb 23 21:57:12 servidor1 kernel: reiserfs: checking transaction log (dm-0)
for (dm-0)
Feb 23 21:57:12 servidor1 kernel: reiserfs: replayed 23 transactions in 1 seconds
Feb 23 21:57:12 servidor1 kernel: Using r5 hash to sort names


I want use new version v4 but I don't want to lost my data. are there any form
to convert my fs to a new version v4??? This files are not critical for the
system, only data..

Hi,

    Actually, there are no a way. You need to backup and re-write it 
your data.

    However, I speak with Hans and probably we will release a 
tool/utility for that purpose.

    We have no date for this release.

There is the program convertfs:
	http://tzukanov.narod.ru/convertfs/

I don't think it suports reiser4, but you could probably write a patch or
ask the author nicely.  It's supposed to do in-place filesystem conversion
by using a sparse loopback file.

I've only heard good things about it, but I've never used it.

convertfs is in debian testing/unstable, just to let you know.
You should have a look at:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=230995

I don't think it can handle reiser4, yet.
Reiser4 is not stable now, so if you care for your data I'd
stick with reiserfs v3.6 for now.

I fear that unless someone funds convertfs, it will not become mature.  
Reiser4 however is very close to release.

       We plan to support in our distro ReiserFS 3.x and 4.0 at the same 
time.

       About to port OLD data to ReiserFS 4, a simple 'tar cvfz' will be 
usefull to backup and replace.

    Seems that Debian is working on. In any case we will do our tests and make
    our decisions.

    My idea when i comment to Hans, was based on the fact that RedHat haves these tools
    for EXT2 to EXT3 and viceversa.

convertfs does _not_ need special support for new file system type. It
can convert arbitrary file system foo to arbitrary file system bar, on
the condition that bar supports loop back files.

Sorry, I got it backward. Loop back support on foo is required. So, to
convert reiserfs to reiser4 one needs loop back on reiserfs, which is
not a problem.

    I will investigate better on this tool and if fine we will test on 
ReiserFS 3.X <-> 4.0 final.
