I successfully used 'snd-intel8x0m' on my ancient laptop, an ASUS M3410C:
 http://luca.pca.it/projects/asus/m3410c/

My success post on the 'discuss@linmodems.org' mailing-list is here:
 http://linmodems.org/cgi-bin/ezmlm-cgi?1:mss:13083:200402:pkpdkliklhpapcodpmop

I already posted on 'alsa-user@lists.sourceforge.net'
 http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=3847625&forum_id=1751
while it seems that my post never reached 'alsa-devel@lists.sourceforge.net'.

ASAP I'll try with my new laptop (an ASUS M6842NWH, M6800N family), just to have
another confirmation.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

thanks everyone who reported about intel8x0m driver.
it's already in the alsa-kernel tree and Linus' 2.6.5-rc1.

please give a try.

I tried 'intel8x0m' in the latest 2.6.5-rc1 on my new ASUS M6842NWH (M6800N) and
I got 'NO DIALTONE' in wvdial:

Just to be sure (this is the first time I get 'NO DIALTONE' in my tests), I
tried the /normal/ 'slamr' driver and it's the same. So I tried 'slamr' (with no
success) as suggested here:

PS to the ALSA-devel mailing-list: I'll stop to post until I could connect to
the net with my modem, as IMHO this is not a specific problem of the
'snd-intel8x0m' driver (as with the 'slamr' one is the same). Please let me know
if I should continue double posting...
