Hi,
Sorry for my bad english language ;(
But I want signaled a bug with pppd and SMP.
I can't use adsl with a SMP kernel.
I use slackware 10.0 with 2 kernels compiled 2.4.26
My machine is a Proliant Server ML370, Biprocesseur Pentium III
Coppermine, with Raid Array, 768Mo ram.
The original ppp version in slackaware, is release 2.4.2, but i have
downloaded 2.4.0, compiled, tested, with the same result bug.
The result is same with ppp kernel static, or ppp module..
the example above is with ppp resident kernel
compiled kernels is same, only difference is
first compiled without SMP
second compiled with SMP.
After a little research about my failing connexion adsl, I have found this.
When i start a simple pppd command with kernel no-smp i see in log files

if i start twice, the entire system stalls, and i do use poweroff buttom,
it is the effect when a start adsl-start ;P
Please, do you know some patch for this problem ? what i do make for
more pertinent informations ?

but i am a stupid boy,
When i would use ksymoops, i see more warning.. also i'he recompiled my
kernel, but i have made some changes... (delete and/or replace modules)
and STUPID, i have delete my old-config ;(
Oops..
BUT, with this new kernel, i can start pppd without crash,.. hum good ;)
whenever, after start adsl, the use of internet (sample lynx
www.gnu.org) crash always, with KERNEL BUB sched.c..... whaoo !!
Also I reedit my kernel, replace all modules by static,
reinstall slack ppp (2.4.2-i486), and on
my Proliant ML370 P17 with kernel 2.4.26 + SMP, pppoe is OK. Why ?
I join my config because, I don't say if my network configuration is
correct.
Purhaps, you can help me for my new problem,
I have error when i compile source of ppp.

That appears to be a newer version of bpf.h in the Slackware 9.1 tcpdump
package I have installed. I don't know why the name changed but it breaks
the compile. A workaround might be to symlink it to bpf.h:
cd /usr/include/net
ln -sf pcap-bpf.h bpf.h
Somebody is eventually going to have to change the name, either the
maintainer of Slackware, or pppd, or tcpdump, but I don't know which
one should make the change. In pppd 2.4.2 pbf.h is present in both
demand.c and sys-linux.c .

Aaggrhh! I failed to use the directory to which pcap-bpf.h belongs,
which is different from that for bpf.h . The symlink should, of
course, be
ln -sf /usr/include/pcap-bpf.h bpf.h

Good question. A quick look at Slackware 10.0 sources shows that
tcpdump and libpcap are both maintained by the same person. So the
pppd source must eventually change. And P.V. didn't change the source
in that regard for Slack 10.0. My *guess* would be that the newer
tcpdump had not appeared at the time the 10.0 pppd binary was built.

Yes, the second link above contains
