Yes, it is a know issue -at least by me- but it's a problem inside MSN's
Messenger design; even though it's gotten better after 6.0, it happens
not only with iptables but with many other routers in the market.

I posted several times the same answer on this list
I don't have the text anymore so I can't send it to you right now
basically msn messenger needs an UPnP capable network gateway, which, to
say it very shortly will allow inside clients to tell the gw which
connections/redirections they need.
there is an upnp daemon working with iptables/netfilter for linux
try and search this list's archieves to find my former posts which explain
what to install and where to get it.

microsoft has not only been having software-related technical issues
with the MSN Messenger network, but also has been dealing with the
Funner virus spreading through that network as well.

if you want to change your firewall based on an outage in a free instant
messaging service, feel free to do so.

In a last couple of days MSN was down several times. Nothing you, or
anybody else can do about it. Switching to different firewall would
have no effect. On the other hand, switching to different instant
messaging program (ICQ, AIM, Yahoo, just to name few of the bigger
names) would probably solve the problem. Which is supposedly solved by
MS by now anyhow.
Thierry mentioned uPnP. MSN *does not* need uPnP to work. You can
safely turn uPnP off by setting appropriate registry entry. Should be
fairly trivial to find which one using Google. It might be good idea to
do it anyhow, since if you search for info on uPnP you'll find that
everybody is suggesting to turn it off because it's unsecure. I've
never tried to dig more info about uPnP, but if what Thierry wrote was
correct, I'd turn it off immediatelly (applications being able to
uncontrollably punch holes in firewall, not likely in my shop, virus
writers would surely *love* that feature).
