[lm-sensors] New mailing-list

Hi all,

I guess that you are all aware of the mailing-list change that has
occured yesterday. We have moved to a new mailing-list, handled by
Mailman. This should be much more convenient than the previous
procmail-based system.

I wish to thank the following people for their help:

* Philip Edelbrock has been running the previous list since its
creation. It has been a continuous work due to the manual nature of the
system. All it all it has worked remarkably well, except for the few
bouncing storms which hit us in the past few years. These are one of the
reasons, and the trigger, for the change.

* Andrew Pollock has been maintaining an archive of the previous list
for the past few years. Sure it stuck a few times, but nevertheless it
was an unvaluable resource for us developers and for users as well. More
recently he helped migrating the archives to the new system.

* Axel Thimm has been offering to host the new list, took care of
installing and configuring Mailman, and merged the old archives.

Thanks a lot to all of you for making the list migration finally happen

Now, for you users, here are the changes and a few things you should be
aware of:

* No more storms :)

* All users of the old list have been automatically subscribed to the
new list.

* You can change your subscription options through the Mailman
interface:
  http://lists.lm-sensors.org/mailman/listinfo/lm-sensors
So you don't need to bug Philip anymore. Another benefit is no more
subscribe/unsubscribe noise on the list itself.

* The archive is now available at:
  http://lists.lm-sensors.org/pipermail/lm-sensors/
The old archive will stay around for some time, but will not receive the
newer posts.

* The CVS commit messages will now be routed to a separate list:
  http://lists.lm-sensors.org/mailman/listinfo/lm-sensors-commit
You have *NOT* been automatically subscribed to this one, as we believe
that not everyone is interested in these messages and they were noise
for some of you (which is why a different list was created for them).
So, everyone interested in these CVS commit messages should go and
subscribe.

And that must be it. If anything doesn't work as expected, feel free to
complain to Axel, Philip or me.

My thanks to everyone as well. Great job.

IMHO not worth merging CVS commit archives to new system.
Best way to get history of CVS is to use CVS :)

I note that our search page needs  updating. I'll do that.
I'll note that Andrew's archive has stopped getting new posts
but that  the gmane archive continues to, so it is best for search.
(It was best for search before, because we relied on google  for  Andrew's archive)

Does the new system have a search function or do we need to wait for google to find it?

Yes, indeed, having *-commits archived is a bit overkill. :)

mailman has no native search function, there are some patches and
external tools available, but nothing is really satisfying:

When google catches up (may take some time) we can use
"site:lm-sensors.org <search string here>". We could even paste a
google search on this site into the archive's html pages.

I'm fine with relying on Google for this. This worked just fine for
Andrew's archive, so I see no reason why it wouldn't work for the new
archive.

We can help Google find the archive by just linking to it, from our
search page of course, but also maybe from our index page in one of the
news item related to the new mailing-list, and our FAQ needs an update
as well. I'll add a link from my home page too, until Google gets it,
and will make sure to use the new archive for references I post to the
LKML for now on. I just updated the Freshmeat lm_sensors record. We may
additionally ask Andrew to put some link on the old archive, if not for
Google, it will certainly help the users.

I'm confident that Google will find the new archive soon enough anyway.
Shall we bet? Before I go to the Guadec [1] it should be done.

Also why the archive is called lm-sensors
and old is known as lm_sensors?

Maybe we should add keyword lm_sensors too. Or put to old archives "moved pernamently redir"

The site had to be called lm-sensors, '_' is not wllowed in domain
names. And having a mixed email looks strange. I think Jean tends to
s/_/-/g anyway ;)

You could have bet that Google would take way less time than that to do
the job, and you'd have won. The whole archive is indexed already :)
Quite impressive, methinks.

BTW, anyone else coming at the Guadec?
