[KJ] [RFC] new design for kerneljanitors.org?

Good evening,

One might argue that a corporate design is long overdue for the various 
linux-kernel projects ;-)

So while the heat in germany hinders me from doing sophisticated kernel 
stuff, I gave the old kerneljanitor webpage a design based on the 
kernel.org site (just took me 30 minutes).

A first version can be found at http://veeck.dyndns.org/

There are of course two things which I need to know:

- your comments and thoughts about such a change, especially from Domen 
Puncer since he is the official maintainer. I did not make any changes 
to the content, but there seems to be a need for refreshing it too. For 
instance the link to "Acme's original Janitor TODO list" is not valid 
anymore.

- the permission of the kernel.org-webmaster (or whoever owns the 
copyright to their stylesheet) to use and modify their css-file. Is it 
alright from your side?

So, who wants to start the bashing? ;-)

Thanks, I put a local version of that todo up.
About the design... I liked the previous more... it was more compact.
At least for me, but I'm no designer. :-)

well i'm not conviced by this premis.
i like a lot the baby penguin for the kernelnewbies project.
every project has his own choices.

as domen pointed already out the current version is more compact.
also aboves looks much more rudimentary and we don't have a nice kernel
banner to display on the top that is worth for 99% of the kernel.org
visits. :)
btw. i'm quite happy to learn that kernel.org design is moving.

it seems that it already started. :-P


current design was done by Randy Dunlap.
it should validate as html 4.01. i agree that tables shouldn't be used
as design elements (but div layers) and that it should move to xhtml.
it's still on my todo list but without much priority.
so if you would achieve same design but newer code working for browser
mozilla Seamonkey >= 1.0 and ie >= 5.0 that would be great.

kerneljanitor-website. Highlights this time:

- looks exactly (99%) as the existing one, keeping the compact design
- 1% difference due to minor text-cleanups
- 100% XHTML 1.1, no more table-mess
- 100% CSS, making it more flexible than the previous one

Well it is tested with Firefox 1.0.4, Opera8 and IE6. Other browsers are 
not at my disposal.

I'm in favor of removing the link to
"Randy's patchsets" since they are ancient history.
Proably same for Maximilian's patchsets.

Just under that, the link to the kernel bugzilla database
is not underlined for me (firefox 1.0.4), while all other
links are underlined... ??

I like this neat, compact format.

If it makes sense, I would suggest adding a recent
tutorial that I did on Linux kernel development styles
and social/behavioral engineering:

"Tytso's 2.4 TODO" is obsolete too, I guess.

Nope, that's just the hyperlink-visited behaviour, I guess you were 
there before, while you dont visit all the other documents so often.

Unfortunatley, it doesn't look very good in my Firefox setup, most
likley due to the relative positioning of the <div>'s.

I took the liberty of making some improvements to the css and html. You
can see the results at http://www.etek.chalmers.se/~lukass/linnewb/

The attached diffs show the (fairly small) changes I made.

The only regression, as I see it, is that I had to place the
offsite-links before the local- and contact-info in order for the float
to work nicely. This makes the offsite links appear before the local and
contact when viewed in lynx or with stylesheets enabled.

Just IMHO I would like to change "page last modified MM-DD-YYYY" to

but you can't bet on the users having the latest hyped thingy around.
a webpage should look nice for any mozilla >= 1.0 (yes the old suite)
and ie >= 5.5. they both have already some basic css support.

i agree that the browser of the 4th generation aka netscape 4.x 
and ie 4.x can be ignored due too very low percentage of global
usage and their lack of basic css support.
 
that's not too much of an effort.
i'm sure you have other browsers around.

a) it has the left- and right-column layout fixed in its html-code which 
would impose this layout on other css-layouts. (Thats not the same 
html-code as the proposed design from Lukas Sandström and me?)

html4.01, while it technically is xhtml?

c) where's my nice janitor-penguin ;-) ?

"page" all alone written just below the pingouin.
- Maybe you can adjust the fonts size. Just my feeling, but I found the

Thx for the feedback although I just installed the first 
release-candidate of Firefox (Windows) and saw the page rendered 
correctly. Anyway, changing the width of the header would be no problem 
with the css-based design.
As would be changing the size of the fonts, which are (at least for the 
classic design) taken over directly from the original page.
So if you have the time (and some skill) why not try to design your own 
css-file and show us how the page can look a lot more different ;-) ?
